temp needle goes all the way up then down a lil then up sometimes.. why??
my civic just started having the temp needle go up far then it goes down some and it keeps doing this.. but only sometimes.. smoke comes from under the hood but i dont know where? why? i cant see any places where the antifreeze leaks?
not sure but be happy it works. my needle is always down all the way on cold. anyone know if there is a quick fix for our problems? thanks in advance
if it stays on cold then the sensor is prob not connected.. under your distributor there is a little plug that goes into the head.. its small and hard to find so check carefully . plug it back in.. thats prob your prob.

If your temp gauge went up all the way and you stayed there long enough to notice it go down and back up again then chances are that smoke under your hood could be the head gasket or warped head. Check for antifreeze in your oil or start the car with the radiator cap off and check for bubbles. If you notice the needle going up past middle then turn on the heat and stop the car before you do more damage.
make sure you check your grounds.. I had this happen to me in my old crx... I had a problem with my tranny ground not being clean.

FYI.. when the temp guage goes up high and smoke starts coming from the engine bay.. turn your car the **** off..
Edit: That would be overheating.. which can severly damage your engine. Might want to get that checked..

If it's always on cold then your thermostat could be stuck open.

mine has been acting up lately, I swapped out the thermostat, flushed the system, then low and behold it happened again! doh!
turns out its a seal on the radiator cap!
damn it!
I took the cap off, looked at the rubber rings/seals and one is ripped into a traingular shape instead of round, man, suck I did that other work... but at least NOW this is an easy fix.
So, look at your raditor cap, never forget that might be the culprit!
