I've heard mixed opinions on whether or not it's absolutely necessary to use a torque plate when overboring the cylinders in an open deck block. The machine shop i use primarily works on V8's and doesn't have any torque plates for honda blocks. It wouldn't be hard to make one, but if it isn't necessary it's one less thing to fab.

 

if you plan on reving it up a lot it is definatly a good idea almost mandatory if you plan on keeping this motor turbo for a while. it allows a true (accurate) bore and hone due to strech in the block under torque ask the machine shop they will tell you considering that your open deck, the walls will move a bit at high rpm and also with boost looking at it like this i would definatly do it i had it done with a
closed deck h22

 

Yeah i know what they're used for. I know of a handful of people that went with a .020" overbore on the stock sleeves and the machine shop didn't use a torque plate, and they're motors are running fine even with 400whp.

 

Our tq plates cost us around 350-400 bux each.......pretty cheap...considering our machine shop didnt want to purchase them because "we dont feel the market requires us to buy them, but if you want to buy them....."

i belive that it would be seen more in the longevity of the motor (pistons, rings)
as you said the v8 guys almost always do it and their blocks are cast iron not alum and most of those are closed deck.

 

Well, we'll see how it goes. I may go in with the machine shop to purchase a torque plate up to 85mm since they want to expand into the import market.

 

It is absolutely necessary to use a torque plate when an engine is being bored/honed. If they dont use one, then dont expect your motor to ever run right.

 

I don't mean to jump on somebody elses post, But I have one for sale.

They help alot on open deck blocks as nothing supports the sleeves while boring.It stops the bores getting oval shape, It cost us $350 to have made plus the amount of the material, It is 85mm and has bolts with it and it will fit all B series motor.

I'm afraid I have to take the other side on this. If you have an open deck the torque plate does not affect the cylinders at all. The cylinders go where they want to go. Torque plates only work with closed decks.

 

Earl, that's what my machinest was saying. All the V8 blocks they do are cast iron closed decks and they use torque plates for those blocks. I'm also boring the block with a blockgaurd already installed, so that should help keep the cylinders in place if anything.

 

It's like chicken soup..it won't help but it can't hurt
