whirring sound past 2K RPM...TOB?
my tranny doesnt grind gears but after appr. 2500 RPM, a whirring/grounding sound comes on. also, when i engine brake, it whirs/grounds. the best way i can describe it is you know that sound that the tranny makes when ur idling, then when u depress the clutch it goes away? it sounds like that [but noticeably louder] when it comes on its like VTEC but less pleasent
. meaning its either making noise or not at all, it doesnt get louder gradually. its off from idle to about 2500 RPM then it sounds off. is my tranny going bad or do i need a new clutch? the clutch disk itself is fine. i can still chirp 2nd gear no problem, but perhaps the bearing is shot? its a D16Y8 with 130K TIA

I'm not to expirienced with Trannies but it sounds like a warped flywheel or worn clutch. Someone else probly knows more than I do about this stuff...EDIT: It could also be a throwout bearing or clutch fork

thanks for the input. i doubt its the flywheel. of my 3 hondas, ive never warped one. but on my last 96 civic [hatch] i had that TOB sound at idle with the clutch released. im hoping thats what it is. anyone know what symptoms the car shows when the throw-out bearing starts to break down?
I work in a transmission shop, and it sounds like bearings to me. Your tranny will be fine for a while, but if you have the funds rebuilding it might not be such a bad idea.
