Default Hitting Fuel Shut at 8000rpm... Help?

Well I was taking my car up to the gas station yesterday, I accelerated out of a corner in 1st gear and my fuel shut came in at about 8000rpm... This was very disconcerting to say the least. I went home checked my plugs, oil, air filter (all seemed to be ok) and reset my ECU. Took the car back out and again, fuel shut off at 8000rpm.

I was thinking my car may need a valve adjustment, last one was 10,000 miles ago (getting a lot of valve chatter lately), but I dont think that in anyway is related to my problem. VTEC hits at the same rpm as before, 5800 on the tach, so I dont think the tach miraculously changed.

Do you guys have any ideas, suggestions, solutions? I have had way too many problems with this car and I am pretty sure when I get things sorted out it is going up for sale. It is one of the greatest cars to drive, but my problems continue. Help is very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

on mycar with the stock ecu, 1st gearalways shuts down at actual 8200(indicated 8600)
and 8600(9000 indicated) in all other gears

i was going to say that the stock tachometer wasn't that accurate.. but shutting off at an indicated 8000 rpm (probably ~77-7800 actual) is WAY off dont you think?

That may be the case... but shut off is way lower than it used to be. It is also significantly lower in gears 2 and 3 (cuts out at 8000rpm indicated). Car seems to run fine otherwise though.

The car is cutting out about 600rpm sooner than it did just a day prior.

How do I check for codes?

is your CEL on?

http://www.c-speedracing.com/faq/06.php

edit: even if your CEL was on, i dont know of any codes that would put you in an 8000 rpm limp mode. (since the rest of your gears do it too)

I can understand the stock tach not being accurate but it should be consistant. I mean the shut off used to be around 8700 rpm indicated... now it cuts at 8000. The tach cant just change like that, can it?

The car is doesnt seem to be in limp mode (I have VTEC) I just have 600 less rpm to use.
There is no CEL.
I will see if the ECU is throwing a code. I am not worried about the tach being off, does anyone know or ever heard of a fuel shutoff just lowering?

edit: Can the ECU be throwing a code if the check engine light is not on?

I have a similar problem on my Civic Si.
The rev limiter is set at 7800, but it cuts off at 6500 rpms. Although, sometimes it will cut off at 7000 rpms. I have no CEL codes either. I've swapped ECU's and bypassed the water temp gauge with a resister to see if that will do anything. I still have the same problem. VTEC comes on and off as it should. Also tested the connection from the water temp sensor to the ECU and the connections are good.

I know my cat and O2 sensor are working because it just passed emissions. (If that even has anything to do with it)
NOx Standard 1577 Reading 750
HC Standard 203 Reading 48
CO% Standard 1.15 Reading 0.05
CO2% 14.6

Haven't found any solutions yet. It has left me stumped. I wish I could monitor all the sensors so it might give me a clue what's going on.

Wouldn't happen to have any type of engine management system do you? (ie, vafc, hondata, etc etc ). If you do, recheck all the connections. I had the same problem but it was caused by the vafc. Good luck to you.

car is absolutely 100% stock.

Is it time to bite the big bullet and take it to the dealership?

could be ignition related, have you checked dist. rotor? its right behind dist. cap, if it looks burned it could cause early cuttof, but don't seem it would wait until 8000RPM.... another thing, your tach could be off,

heres on way to find out.. with stock 195/55 tires you should hit rev limiter at 8400rpm - wich is 41mph in 1st gear and 63mph in 2nd gear. at 8000rpm it would be 39mph in 1st gear and 60mph in second gear... now 2 things - be reasonable and don't downshift - hitting rev limiter is not a good thing..

you could also hook it up to a dyno where it will read ignition signal and tell rpm, or maybe you could hook something without going to the dyno to tell.

Thanks,
Brian

Car is warm, of course!

I dont think it could be the tach. I mean I go to sleep one night, the car pulls to 8600 rpm indicated. I wake up the next day car hits fuel shut off at 8000rpm indicated. Seems strange to me

I will change distributor cap and rotor tomorrow. It probably needs that anyway, it has been about 15-20k miles since last change.

Just a side note I forgot to mention. I put on a new dist. cap and rotor on my car too. Timing is retarded due to around 15 degrees (if I remember right) because of higher compression.

I hope a new dist cap and rotor fixes your problem so at least I'll have an idea of what to check on my car too.
