Default LSD pre-load??

What exactly is meant by the word pre-load when used in context with an LSD? I hear the term used frequently, but have no idea what it is. Anyone know? Also, I just put a ITR LSD in an '99 Si (B16A) tranny and I notice that while not in VTEC, the motor sounds like normal, but once in VTEC, I can hear what sounds like the gears working. What gives?

I have an Si tranny with a Quaife, and i occasionaly get the same sound, almost a whining dound. It mostly went away when i switched back to Honda MTL, i had redline in it for a week or so after the diff install and i swiched back to the Honda stuff and it hardly ever makes the "whine" ever.

I was also thinking its too slippery for the syncros to work right, thats why i would get high RPM grinding with it, all my tranny noises stopped as soon as i switched to Honda MTL, and ive never looked back.
