i used a heat gun and a paint scraper. if you heat the tar just enough it slids right off but becareful about over heating the tar this just makes a mess. if you don't have a heat gun than a hair drier could work it will just take longer. good luck though whatever you choose to do.

hammer and chisel is the best method. I've tried them all.

Dry Ice makes the hammer and chisel so much easier, as well. You can look up "ice" or "dry ice" in your yellow pages, or you can call up your local baskin robbins and ask them where they get thier dry ice.

propane torch and a scraper

then brake parts cleaner to take off the left over tar residue

torching it is a good way to make a huge mess, and kill your braincells by breathing in the fumes.

go with the sub freezing temp method (i.e. really really cold nights)...its cost effective, and since its cold out nowadays, you can give if a shot, nothing lost

i happened to spill some coolant on the deadening material and everywhere the coolant soaked in it was really easy to get the stuff off with a soft tap on the butt of a chisel. Almost like the coolant dissolved the glue. Anyway after that i poured some more and let it sit and it actually seems to be effective.
