Default best turbo

Hey, i've got a 00 si with an f-max kit on it. my current turbo's a turbonetics t3/t4 and i'd like to upgrade to something that spools a little faster and has less lag to it. Right now, it starts spool at 3,000 rpms. Its mainly a street driven car and I'd like something that can make 300-350 whp. A ball bearing would be nice, but kind of expensive. Any suggestions please? Thanks

You can make that power with what you have now. If you get full boost at 3000rpm then thats pretty damn good.

if you wanna spool earlier...get a boost controller and wrap your mani...they both help a tad...may be able to get it down to 2500...any lower, you will need to boost up the compression a bit, but 2500-3000 is plenty good!

I gotta reply cause I got schooled on this one before.

A high compression setup will not spool a turbo any faster than a lower compression setup. It deals more with displacement.

Think about it. a 1.8L with 9:1 CR spits out 1.8L of spent gas every 2 Revs.
And a 1.8L with 11:1 spits out 1.8L of gas every 2 revs, but has more power.
So both spool at some random number........3500, but the 11:1 gets to 3500RPM quicker than the 9:1 because the power output is higher.

I beg to differ!

higher compression spools faster because there is more exauhst energy...

basically like 1.8l of air coming out harder/faster than low compression

or that is what I thought..

maybe the gas temperatures would be higher, but shouldn't it spool at the same RPM, just the higher Compression Motor get to that RPM faster............

**The only thing I'm saying is that Full boost RPM should be the same. That's it**

same "literage" and same piston speed..... But the RPMs DO climb faster, because there is power power per stroke

No, you don't. Low spooling means no traction off the line. I spool at 2500 rpms, and off 4 psi non-IC w/ Azenis I can sit and spin most the way through third gear before hooking... and that's without trying hard, just ******* up a launch and not taking my foot far enough out of the gas pedal in first and on shift into second and then deciding the hell with it - make a big cloud of tire smoke and pretend I'm bad or something. /me rolls eyes.

I also bark 4th gear, and not (entirely) due to power output. A little too much negative camber and a chassis prone to wheelhop are killing off my traction.

Your mileage may differ with a low spooling turbo depending on how your suspension and power level are, but my $0.02 is aim for a spool of 3500+ rpm, even for street car, unless you're dealing with some gutless D-series w/ Greddy kit.

I dont have too terrible of traction problems, of course i dont have nearly as much power as most of the rest of you do. But i guess i'll stick with my current turbo, save some cash. Thanks for all the help guys.
by the way, i like your icon with agent smith. i like the part when he was like "find them and destroy them" that was so funny.

I have to agree with Art. Save your $$ and stick with what you've got. Ball bearing turbos aren't that expensive. A GT-28 retails from us at $950. I expect to see the prices on these things start to drop.
