Default bought hatchback, need advice on sound

I just bought a '93 civic si and I want to fix up the stereo system. The car came with an eclipse head unit and an alpine amp sitting in the trunk. I don't know what front speakers it has(they don't sound that great), but there were 2 dinky 15watt 4" pioneer speakers sitting in the trunk. I'd like to get 4 good quality speakers under $500 total. I also don't want sub. What are the max size drivers I can fit in the front doors? Also, where would the stock speaker mounts be located in the back? I didn't find any speaker grills in the back anywhere.

What are some brands I should look at? I don't need anything exotic, just something with a flat frequency reponse and decent bass output. I notice infinity gets recommended a lot.

Badass headunit. Are you looking for components or coaxials?

ummm, whats a component and a coaxial?

Also, there is a strange problem with the head unit. There is no sound output when playing any cd. The equalizer is moving up and down and stuff and the timer moves and I can switch tracks, but there isn't any sound. FM works fine. I wonder if i can just get a cd changer and play cds using that.

Umm... I can't help you with the HU, it sounds like an internal problem. Components are seperate speakers(Midbass, and Tweeter and Crossover), while coaxials are pretty much all in one.
sorry for the size.

I checked out my front speakers, the back says Kenwood KFC 1677. I assume this is a Coaxial, right? Here are 2 pics:

Yes, those are coaxial. If you want a simple drop in upgrade check out crutchfield.com they have listings of what will fit your car without modification. Components will need more wires run, mounting rings, and somwhere to put your tweeters (the small speakers).

6-1/2" speakers are the largest you can fit in the front which will screw into the factory locations. The rear is an excercise in creativity. I make some "brackets" to hold 6-1/2" speakers in mine. Just for reference you will not get any midbass out of the rear speakers without making some type of enclosure for them.

Here are a few picks of my set up to give you an idea:
*In the front I used components (tweeters mounted in a pod from a 99' Si).

I work at an internet store, http://www.audio-warehouse.com. If you have any questions or if you are looking for good prices check out the site or give me a call.

Oh, one more thing. Depending on what model the Eclipse head unit is, it may or may not have a built in (internal) amplifier. I did not see anything on the faceplate indicating a wattage output (ex. 50 x 4). I'm thinking you have a higher end model that has no built in amp and can run a system ONLY from an external amp via the radio's RCA outputs.

It was pretty easy. The pod is from a 99 Si. It has essentially the same dimensions as the pod which comes in the Civics. You see that hole in the upper portion of the pod? I had to drill that in order to support it in place. There is another screw in the lower portion of the pod which cannot be seen which I felt was also necessary for support. I have seen another person mount the same pod without having to make a hole in the upper portion but I was never able to figure out how it was supported.
