stock ls motor and all cylinders were right around 180. nothing abnormal on the compression test. i did it because i notice only when i accelerate hard and especially on fast shifts that it puffs a good bit. it just didn't do this before. it's fine when idling and normal driving just smells pretty rich through exhaust.
i have a hose that runs from the valve cover to a filter that sits low on the subframe. the inside of the hose is coated with oil and the filter is somewhat drenched. the area all around the breather filter is wet from oil. i check this stuff whenever i am under the hood and noticed it got bad suddenly making me worry. any ideas on what i need to do or other things that i should check? thanks.

hummm what I am thinking is that you might have bad valve seals. Since you did a compression check and it was okay. Usually a compression check will check the compression of the pistons not he valve seals. Only a leak down test will tell you if your valve seals are bad. I could be wrong but that is all I am thinking right now. Can anyone shed some light on here also. Thanks.. Peace out
I agree with crxlsturbo. What I did was buy a compression tester, with a detachable gauge. Then, I pressurized my air compressor to 100 psi, and induced all of that into the cylinder (at tdc) and see where it leaked out. Granted, it does not tell me the percentage of leakdown, but it diagnoses the probem quite efficiently.

same thing happend to my stock internal sohc motor
pushing lots o oil through the breather
i keept driving even after my friend siad he noticed smoke
untill did a compression check my 3rd cly was 50 compression
bye bye motor

will bad oil rings cause the smoking only like when i described (hard acceleration and shifting fast?) and will this also give me all this oil blow by out the valve breather? ok thanks for the advice everyone. i guess i ama gonna hava to do something bout this.

if it was my valve seals?...wouldn't it smoke all the time even at idle? it doesn't and if it does there isn't a hint of oil in the smoke. now when i get on it...the cabin fills with oil scent that i want to puke all over the place so i haven't been boosting

check your turbo also.. for oil... leakin out.. i had a simular problem.. have alook past the exhaust wheel on ya turbo... and look for oil.. maybe your oil drain is't efficent... or the seal's r goin slowly.. but if it's the turbo.. it dos't expain why your gettin blow buy.. in ya valve cover... ! unless its both...

If your valve seals are worn it shouldn't smoke at idle. When you rev it high or pull out from a stop sign you should notice it blowing/puffing smoke. If your running a turbo a small amount of oil from the breather valve is normal (IMO). I think this is why you want to run a catch can? Does anyone agree?
does it smoke at all when you start it? if it does,,.. its the valve seals,. adjusting your valves wont do you a damn bit of good,.. because that adjusts the lash,. witch if you were too tight it would run funny,.. and if you were too loose it would tick,.. the valve seal rides on the neck of the valve. you need to see what color of smoke it is. most likely you have the same problem my old dx has, bad oil rings, that doesnt show up on a leakdown, or compression check.
hope i could help. sorry im not good at explaining things. if you have any questions im me at suprajb on aim.
i am ase certified so i can answer your questions. just ask!
