Default Yet another "How much boost can I run safely?" thread...

I know everybody is tired of seeing these threads, but I really need some opinions. The engine is a 2000 d16y8 with stock internals and a manual transmission. Here's my set up: T3, 12:1 FMU, FPR, 270cc injectors, stock intank fuel pump, MSD inline fuel pump, side mount intercooler, blitz bov, usual gauges, and a 3" downpipe. How much can this set up safely handle? I just blew a y7 and dropped this one in. I REALLY don't want to damage this engine. The y7 had a blown headgasket and cracked ringlands running 8psi. I wasn't using the inline on that motor, so I'm thinking the damage was fuel related. Can 8psi be run on the y8 motor without totalling a headgasket or cracking ringlands? If not, how much can I run? Any assistance is GREATLY appreciated. TIA

EDIT: Should my timing be retarded? If so, how much?

Im not that great in turbo knowledge but i do know that's why your motor blew up is because you were boosting 8psi with no good FMU. I know this simple knowlede. If you have enough fuel anything maybe possible. But with a sucky FMU give it up. I on a stock motor you should be able to run 6-7 psi safely everday. More than that your taking a risk and risking your engine which i dont think you want to do.

You have tools listed. The best help we could give would require information that helps from a tuning standpoint. You need to measure AF ratios, intake temps, EGT's, Octane.

And yes you will want to retard timing about .75 degrees per pound of boost.

You can run lots of boost safely with those tools, it depends how they are being used. Good luck

Thanks. Tuning in my area is tough. The closest dyno is about an hour away. Thats hard on my schedule. There is a shop that does what they call "rough tuning." They take the car for a drive and adjust your FPR to what they feel is right. Out of the question. You're not driving my car and I'm sure I can find better tuning opinions here on H-T. Thanks for the help so far. Keep it coming. Does 8psi seem like too much for my set up?

Yeah. I would never trust a "seat of the pants" dyno to do tuning on my car. Your car always runs the fastest nice and lean right before it is about to melt something, so that method doesn't seem too safe to me. Just figure out some way to tune it. Wideband o2?

wide band 02= lots of cash. My cashflow is nice and tight thanks to the holidays and purchasing a new motor. Does anyone here have a similar set up? How much boost are you running? Is your motor well tuned?

I would get a headgasket from inline pro. The timing must be retarded. then you should be able to run the 8psi you want, but to be on the safe side you should have it at 6-7psi that would be best the headgasket would be your best bet to having 8psi.

Inline does not make a gasket for SOHC motors. Though it would be an ideal way to boost more on a stock motor.

Actually, fmu's have been pretty reliable in low boost setups. It's at higher boost that they become a problem. You can only run so much fuel pressure...

You're thread should be titled "how much hp can a motor safely handle"
It's not really about boost pressure. With a small turbo, you might make 240 at 12psi. In this instance, a stock motor can handle 12psi easily if tuned correctly. With a bigger turbo, it might make 350 at 12psi. This wouldn't be very safe on a stock motor. It really comes down to power more than anything.

retarding the timing is turning the distributor torwards the front of the car right?

Timing has been retarded 2 degrees. Feels weird starting off from a stop. I thought it might, but with just two degrees????

Yes they do.
Where are you getting your info...they make them for H and B motors.
