Default Bad thermo or head gasket?

My car is overheating during normal city driving. My heat and defrost don't work. Radiator fan is not coming on and lower radiator hose stays cold. Does this sound like a bad thermostat or blown head gasket or what? I took the radiator cap off and let the car idle for about 30 minutes and the coolant level never changed; it started boiling and I turned it off. My coolant overflow tank used to be just about to the full mark, now it is almost filled up to the cap. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

If the hose stays cold it is either the thermo or the water pump.

take out the thermostat and drive it around for awhile. or you might as well just buy a new thermostat. its a cheap fix and that will tell you if the water pump is out. if there was water in the radiator, i wouldnt think it wasnt the head gasket. you KNOW when the head gasket goes. also i might wire the radiator fan to run while the car is on. just safety measures so you dont blow anything. good luck

P.S. do yourself a favor and pull over and shut it off for awhile if it starts overheating. dont just "figure it will get you where youre goin" before you shut it off

Hey thanks for the info. I already wired a switch for my fan, so I use that and I don't let it go much over half on the temp guage.
