Don't ask, don't tell
The less they know the better.
But then again, you would want full compensation in the event of an accident or theft. You can put the value of the motor under your comprehensive coverage, so if anything happens, they'll reimburse you up to the amount that you covered. Your rate may or may not increase because of it. Everyone's rate differs, and it varies from each insurance company. The longer you've been with them, the more lient they are with your needs.
Just keep all receipts. That's the most important part.

two scenarios-
1) Don't tell. They wont know your car is worth more or that it will cost more to replace parts lost in accident/vandalism/theft... so you will NOT be reimbursed their value. You could lose out big time. But the good thing is your cost out of pocket now for rates will stay as low as possible.
2) Do tell them [or add another $3000 ("rider") to your policy, that is what I did]. This will get the motor or other things covered by your policy in case of loss and you will not take a huge hit. But you will pay more out of pocket every month to insure the car, simply because it is worth more and will cost more to repair and or replace. To add an extra $3000 to my Progressive policy it was very cheap, like $100 a year, and this will cover anything up and over the value of the oem parts for my 1992 CX which by itself is only worth $3000. Also, some insurance companies will not offer this service, some will.
So, remember that the Insurance Companies are ruthless, if you dont tell them you have mods to your car and they are not added to your policy (or you dont add a rider) they will not have any problem refusing to pay out for your mods or swap if your car disappears or is totalled. They are not insuring a $10k 1992 civic unless you tell them or request a policy that is that specific.... so be careful and be SMART!

I have heard mixed things, mostly not to tell them, but all the same god forbid you hit someone and your insurance company finds out you have this engine, and they drop you. Could that happen?
Also, KCdelsol, hows that setup, i was thinking of something like that. If you can hit me with an instant message (Nexteks2k) Thanks.

well before i had two cars where all i said were just audio, since thats all they really offered.
Then I asked them about show cars, since people invest $50,000 into a $1000 heap surely they cant expect people to pay high rates and get no coverage.
So they asked what I had and gave a value for it, and as long as i can document that i have it with reciepts and tell them about it, which is what other friends have done too....then its all good. Like right now I think I got like up to $8k in "aftermarket" listed on my policy, so if i get hit my car plus the aftermarket is covered.
help?
you just gotta ask

im from calif. and they have pretty good consumer laws here and ive got AAA insurance..this is how they handle d me..i had about 7k invest d in my 98 coupe..blower, susp., exhaust..the whole bit..and i didnt tell AAA..just kept my receipts..the car was stolen along with all the receipts in the glove box..i thought id be *** d without them..but they sent me a form to fill out with the upgrades in had on the car..i research d my MC receipts and sorta pasted a 7k figure together...in the end they gave me about half what i had paid into the car..they explain d that its like used parts..though new they lose nearly half their value once u walk out the store with them
You could be subject to higher rates, but isn't a del sol a sports car anyway, or is it only the one that came stock with the B16??
My del sol isnt insured as a sports car, and I just added the "riders" like everyone else said they did. It really didnt add all too much to the monthly payment, and you get all of your aftermarket items covered
okay i experience this first hand, i had a 97 dx coupe w/ a jdm b16a and about 4k invested in bolt-ons, suspention, rims etc. i didnt tell my insurance about anything at all even the swap. i got into an accident and totaled my coupe, i then talked to my adjuster and he ask me if i put any aftermarket parts, i told him yes and i also told him that it has a new motor. i fax him most of the reciepts. after about 1 month i got a check for $11 grand for my totalled 97 DX w/ 78,000 miles. my cars blue book was about 6500-7000k. they said they dont pay for the aftermarket parts. they still gave my 11k. so at that time i just shut up and kept my mouth close.
i then bought the coupe back with all its parts and the motor form them for $1700, paid my deductible, got about $8800 left, so i paid off my debt, bought a hatch, and did a swap.
if you have a good insurance company, Don tell them, and if something happens, they'll ask anyways what you have in your car. just keep all your reciepts.

I would tell them. Better to fork up the cash for higher rates than to find out "oops, yeah we didnt know you had that so we are not covering it".

very true. Wouldn't want to gamble with your pride and joy
I got in an accident that was my fault and AAA wouldnt cover **** extra and didnt even pay for o.e.m parts even though as an automobile club they advise members to only use O.E.M. bumpers
1 month(3 weeks ago) later I got in an accident which wasn't my fault and I had a carbon fiber hood and vision corners and crap, Mercury(AAA gave me the boot) wouldn't cover anything except O.E.M parts in their quick repair program, even though they were told about everything on the car at the beggining, but the idiots didn't add that to my coverage, What's ironic though is an O.E.M hood and paint cost as much as a carbon fiber hood
I dunno how everyone got their **** covered with receipts because neither insurance gave a **** about me, now I have to go after the other insurance company to get them to cover everything and they don't want to and are trying to contest the accident, now I am in the middle of a bunch of crap about to be rolling around with a cracked carbon fiber hood till its over

i think my age had something to do with how AAA treat d me..first i raised holy hell to their first offer...so they ask d me what i thought the car was worth..my exact words *when a kid gets his car stolen he just gets another...when the stole mine it was like taking my childhood away again*..then i cried and they
gave me a little less than what i want d
