Default Figuring out engines

I know the GSR engine has more power then the LS but why? is it because of a different design or because it has certain performance factory parts that can easily be added onto a LS?

A gsr has vtec, which is variable valve timing and lift electronic control. It is made up of another lobe on the camshafts and do just what the name says, varies the valve timing at high rpm's to maintain a nice smooth torque and power curve. The also have a higher compression ratio than an LS and are geared better, which makes them faster.
