Drilling a hole in the firewall...
i own a 1998 honda accord, 4 cycl. i want to install an amp, but need to know where to run the wires to the battery. wondering if i should drill a hole in the firewall. if yes, where on the firewall? if not, are there any other alternatives? any help would be greatly appreciated. thnx
You should have posted this in the Audio/Security forum. The easiest place I found is to poke a hole in one of the rubber grommets on the driver's side. Push a pair of stork nose pliers (long *** needle nose) through the hole. Open the jaws and put the wire in the jaws. Close the jaws and pull the wire through. Very simple...
These will become your good friend.

there is a big *** grommet on the firewall on the passenger side below the engine compartment fusebox. this is the easiest one to get to. there is another one on the drivers side in a similar location.
IMO better than the needle nosed plyers is a bent up wire coat hanger and some duct tape to keep the wire on it.

What size wire you running through it? 10 gauge could probably feed through an existing grommet - I think that's what I did - can't remember. Any bigger and you'll probably have to drill a hole - it's not that bad, best place is under the glove compartment using a Uni-bit and a plastic grommet. Drill hole, put grommet in, run wire and silicone up.

I ran 2 guage wire through an existing hole in the firewall...
it sucked.just cut a slit into one of the grommets, and push te wire through.easy stuff.
Meaning that just slitting a hole in a factory grommet and shoving 2 gauge through is rigging it up. You're just asking for problems. There are better ways to do it. I mentioned a better way in a previous post. It also comes down to having the right tools for the job and using some common sense.
I didn't cut the grommet. I pulled all the tape off the wire harness and forced the wire through the existing hole in the grommet, then retaped it. looks pretty much OEM. well if honda used streetwires it would. 2 years+ and not one drop of water.
I did installs for over 5 years, and I'll have to say one of the scariest things I've seen done on a car was a guy ran 4 gauge from the battery through a hole that he drilled through the firewall with the maetal spikes poking out, no grommet, no silicone, and the kicker was that there was NO FUSE on the wire! I pulled the car out of the shop and told my boss I wasn't touching that car, he agreed. So running it through a factory grommet is better than some ways.
Same here SP. I worked at a very respectable shop for 4 years and I've seen it all. A lot of times my friends will buy **** and want me to put it in, but unless I have the right tools, I won't do it. I refuse to rig **** up. Now I wish my dad would learn to put the duct tape down and do things right
I used to work in a shop too. How do you like those people that show up with 4 15" subs, two crap "1000 watt amps", and some lamp cord and expect you to put it in for 50 bucks...
