Procedure for changing transmission fluid.
Hey guys. I searched and i can't find the procedures for changing tranny fluid. If someone can post the procedure and tools need for changing tranny fluid, i would appreciate it. Also how many quarts of honda MTF to use? I have a b16 w/ S1 tranny if that makes a difference. thanx in advance.

It's easy. Using a 3/8" ratchet, plug it into the tranny drain hole on the bottom of the tranny. Put a bucket or something under the hole to catch the old fluid. Undo the bolt and let it drain. While it's coming out, use a 17mm wrench to take off the filler bolt (it'll be located just between the transmission and the mounting point for the passenger-side lower arm, where it mounts to the body). Remove that bolt, and save the washer. Then get a long-neck filler tube and feed it into the hole. When the tranny's done draining, put the bottom bolt back in and start filling up the transmission. When fluid begins to weep from the upper hole, that's it you're done.

BTW, I also have a B16 CRX w/ S1 transmission, so it should be an identical procedure for you (sorry, this is raene, not Mr. S).

I found a cool way to do it is to use a thing that looks like a hand soap pump, but it has a long plastic tube on the end (screws on to the top of all quart-sized bottles, they sell them @ Kragen or wherever). So you just pump the tranny fluid UP into the filler hole from under the car. That way you don't need to worry about doing it from above the engine while keeping the filler tube in the hole.
I switched my tranny fluid at the same time as a friend did his. When he did his, he tried the filler tube and just made a mess. When we did mine, we used the pump and it worked well...it did take a bit longer though.

thanx for the quick responses. how many quarts of MTF do i need to buy? i dont want to have to run to the dealership twice. also you didnt mention it, but i assume this is done more easily with the pass. front wheel off, right? and where can i dump the tranny fluid?
Nope, don't need to take the wheel off...actually won't help at all. For the filler bolt, the bolt higher up, it's a real tight fit and you need to use a BOX-END wrench and double-wrench it to get it off. DO NOT use the open end, it can strip the bolt real easy.
The drain plug bolt is very easily accessible, you should not have a problem with that at all. Once you see it you'll see what we mean.
Should be good with 2 quarts - you won't use the entire 2nd quart I don't think. Lemme look it up real quick - yeah, it says 1.8 qt after a drain, but 2 full qts after an overhaul or rebuild. Oh, and you should get some new crush washers while you're getting the fluid - they're cheap, and it can't hurt to have fresh ones. You don't want a leak, now do ya
