Default Clean Throttle Body - N16A1 1.6 Diesel in Civic 9th Gen

Has anybody ever cleaned (or paid garage to clean) the throttle body on the 1.6 Diesel Engine?

Any / all comments welcome?

Thank You

Does it have a throttle body? Most diesels do not. We don't have the diesel in the Civic here in the US but we have plenty of other diesels.

Yes believe it or not, the Honda 1.6 Diesel has 2 Throttle / Flap Valves ... 1 after airbox and before the turbo and 1 after intercooler and before inlet manifold.

Maybe they are called something else ... not throttle bodies??

I'm happy if anybody wants to dispute above?

They might have an air cut off valve in front of the turbo to insure the engine stops running. And the other might be to create some pressure differential for EGR flow. They are not really throttling the engine, that is done completely by fuel flow.

Again I am not super knowledgeable with Honda diesels but I am familiar with modern diesels in trucks here as well as operating principles of a modern diesel and their emissions systems.

Cleaning these systems is generally not for the home gamer.

I had to look it up, the "throttle body" on the intake manifold is what Honda is calling a swirl valve. Looks like it controls use of secondary intake runners that I assume modify the the amount of swirl in the combustion chamber.

There is another small "throttle body" on the EGR system that is an EGR valve to control how much EGR flow is happening.

I did not find the pre turbo "throttle body" in the parts diagrams. Very likely it is an air shutoff valve.

Can diesels benefit from cleaning the intake tract? Absolutely! Just look at how awful bad the VW stuff cokes up.

Thank You Ryan for your time and additional info which helps my understanding.

Confusion is made worse by breakers on ebay selling flap valve bodies for the 1.6 diesel and describing them as 'throttle bodies'.

I have cleaned the 'pre-turbo air shutoff' flap valve ... easy to get atand easy to clean.

The post turbo flap valve on the intake manifold is difficult to get access to 2 of the fixing studs, the nuts of which face back into the bulkhead / firewall. The other 2 connectors are bolts with bolt heads that face forwards and appear to be just about accessible from leaning under the bonnet / hood. (Anybody any ideas why honda used 2 studs with nuts and 2 bolts? 4 bolts would have been more logical with 4 bolt heads facing the same way towards the front of the car)?

I might consider removing the windscreen scuttle panel at some stage to see if any easier to access the stud nuts... which is why I'm asking on here if anybody has cleaned the flap valve on the intake manilfold?

I have fed a small diameter flexi tube (up the alloy pipe from the intercooler) connected to a can of EGR valve cleaner, I sprayed loads of cleaner and then repeatedly swirled the pipe loads until oily cleaner flowed out back down the alloy pipe.

Above subtley changed my fault symptoms. It's early days as I've not had chance to drive it much since doing above.

Any further comments welcome.
