What’s up?? Need advice
So i just got on this site because I’m helping my son get his 2000 Honda Civic in order. We’re are starting with basic mods air intake, exhaust and manifold(most likely) possibly a new Cat(most likely) but my first question before all that…he has D16Y7 which is a SOHC and not much HP to start with. It has seemed to me that some ppl are in favor keeping the SOHC and topping it out. Some other forums have said an engine swap would be the way to go. I am looking for reason. Is it better to swap or just work with what we have. I was thinking go with what we have as this is our first time doing this. Just trying to get some general opinions and maybe some recommendations.
thank you

Go with what you have. The easy swap option to a B series is now very expensive and starting to become very hard to get.
A K swap is a great option but costly and not for the faint of heart. You will be pretty deep down the rabbit hole to do a K swap and keep it functional like stock with all the creature comforts.

Thanks Ryan. I think thats the best be. We(my son and I) are starting with an air intake. It’s a weapon-R intake said 5-15 horsepower my son is eager to eat something going. I think we’re gonna go with a Yonaka exhaust we found. Just a matter of purchase and putting on… His cat is pretty worn too so I’m thinking of changing that too. Don’t want to have a performance exhaust and shitty catalytic conv.

I would start with a B and go from there. Which one? Don't know. What can you afford? Still wanna stick to the D and still want more hp? Look at force induction.
The intake might net you 5 hp (maybe). Total waste of money. The car will be louder but it won't make a lick of difference for power. By the time you spend $1000 on bolt-ons you will still make meager gains at best with the D. At that point, your son will be discouraged from tuning from spending money and getting nowhere, or will end up throwing more money at it to do it right (like going turbo or doing a swap like he should have).
Cheapest way to make a ton of power (relatively speaking) is by going H2D. Definitely not the most popular combination because you're using an adapter plate but the power to dollar ratio is unbeatable. No changing transmission, axles, etc that you will have to deal with like every other swap. 200 hp and lots of extra torque. Only thing you will need to do with the transmission is change out the differential to a stronger one (stock one will break), so it would be a good time to drop in a nice LSD. Look into H2D adapter plate and mounts and check the old threads in the hybrid section.

If you ask me i would pull the Y7 and sell it because they have weak crank bearings and do a JDM Vtec D series swap and then turbo charge that with a simple bolt on kit from Go Auto works. Get a Hondata S300 for tuning the car and head to a tuner, You will have lots of fun with that setup.
