Default SOHC Civic question!

Hey guys,

I own a 97 civic hatch and was saving up for an H22A swap and I was really anxious about and I allready knew about the fact that the prelude engine is really heavy and that it would affect the cars handling tremendously! First off is this entirely true? Will I loose a great deal of handling, I dont want to do this swap if I wont be able to fly around corners and on ramps and stuff like that, I prefer handling to overall power!

Secondly I was comtemplating not doing the swap and building up the sohc I have now. Most people will say to get the swap first and then think about building up the engine, the fact of the matter is that I really dont car about having the fastest car out there, I just want a car that can be average in terms of the general competition. So what Im asking is what kind of power can I get out of my SOHC and will it be reliable after those modifications.

Ive heard of people replacing the head with a SOHC Vtec head and Ive also heard of people replacing the internals, but either way how much power can I get out of my SOHC, that what I want to know?

Thanks guys for all the help!!!

depending on how much you wanna spend
youll be VERY luck if that engine sees 140whp.

the d-series has alot of potential its just that not many people build them because of the ease of doing a swap. there are quite a few built d-series running respectable times without too much money involved. i would ask mistabone he is a d-series guru.

Mista uses a stock engine with don't quote me cause I am not sure but I thought it was a 50 shot of N2O. That is cheap and effective however, if you do this you need to make sure that you are feeding enough fuel to the enigne and your timing and stuff better be good.

As someone above just said, it really depends on the amount of money that you want to spend. The parts for the D-series motors are available, so parts shouldn't be a problem. A few things that you will need to do is first, a complete rebuild. In this process, I would replace every internal part with a stronger counterpart, and I would get high compression pistons. I would also in the process sleeve the block with sleeves, such as ones made by AEBS. You see, due to the D-series open deck design, at very high rpms, the unsupported cylinder walls can/will crack. Also, you could blow a head gasket. AEBS makes sleeves which not only keep the cylinder walls from cracking, but also resolve your head gasket issues at the same time. Other companies, such as STR also makes sleeves.

Things like the fuel pump, injectors, fuel pressure regulator, ignition, cam gear and timing, etc. will also need to be upgraded. Also, you will need an aftermarket cam. Gude makes a pretty good cam. http://www.gude.com You'll also need to port and polish the cylinder head, and probably get a stronger crankshaft.

You will of course need the basics, such as the header and the exhaust. I would also recommend individual throttle bodies. These will make drastically more power than any intake could ever hope to make for you. That's why you see all these all motor drag cars using them. You will also need to upgrade to a larger throttle body.

Also, I would get a stronger tranny, a LSD, such as one made by Quiafe, and stronger CV joints.

Also, you will need ECU tuning.

There's so much more...but it can be done if you have the money, but I wouldn't dare quote you any horsepower numbers.

Im not really looking for crazy power, well I was but I realized that its not really worth it! Id rather make some decent horsepower from this engine and just have some fun and in the mean time just save up for the nice car!

So if I just wanted to go basics on internals what would I need, I really dont want to have to worry about cracking blocks and blowing gaskets I just want some decent horsepower, maybe 160 at the engine including all the bolt on's.

I figure with I/H/E and with a ecu upgrade, pulley kit and cam and cam gears plus other internal goodies I should get some good horsepower.

Is it a D16Z6? Have you considered the Greddy turbo kit. This kit is carb legal, and depending on the boost, you'll have about 160.

160 all motor on the SOHC might be tough, it would be much easier to bolt on the turbo kit.

Good luck, it looks like you're on the right track.
