Default Auto won't shift past 5500rpm at WOT

00 D16y8 auto. No check engine light or codes stored. I haven't driven the car in 2 months and during the latest drive I noticed that it won't shift past 5500rpm most of the time. If you try to do a WOT pull 1st to 2nd is at 5.5k, 2nd to 3rd is 5.5k, and while in third it shifts back down to 2nd and shifts again at 6.5k, then it stays in 3rd. I haven't tried a 3-4 shift because it's getting pretty fast for public roads. If you hold the trans in 2nd it goes all the way to redline. Any ideas?

Edit: Found out it was a bad connection to the VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

Sounds pretty typical of WOT. Vacuum is high enough it keeps it in the lowest gear possible for the higherish rpm. It tends to think you are pressing a hill or whatnot. Automatics tend to shift at lower rpm, not near redline. That's a manual race driving habit not auto.

that is not how it used to shift. If you were at WOT it would shift at redline or or super close to it, not 1500k before redline or even before vtec. What you are describing is how it shifts at 3/4 throttle, not WOT. There has to be something up with it. Just wondering if anyone else has a similar situation. Probably will do a drain and flush if nobody has a better suggestion.

auto you should do the 3 x 3 method of drain and fill. That is drain 3 liters (or quarts if you are in the states), fill with 3 liters. Drive a bit to work through all the gears. Then do another 3 liter drain and fill, drive a bit to work through the gears, and do a 3rd drain 3 liters and fill 3 liters.

This is the safest method to "flush" Honda automatics and renew the fluids satisfactorily.

Fixed it today. Ended up being a bad connection to the VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

Glad you resolved the issue... and thanks for posting up your solution. Maybe it will help someone else in the future (who bothers to use the search function instead of making a new thread).
