Im doing some work on my car and had to uncrew the bolts between catalytic converter and th Exhaust pipe A
I put some penetrative oil over the course of few weeks before attempting to unscrew these nuts.
The nut came off with the stud, is this normal ? Did i just broke the whole assembly ?
Also as you can see in the pictures the engine bracket supporting the exhaust assembly seems cracked does this need replacement ?
Nut coming off with the stud happens often,IMO normal and will screw back in and can be torqued provided there is no split on flange where it tightens too (I have not encountered damage/split in about 8-10 cases that I have had.
Whether to replace the bracket-- if it was a ef or eg I would leave it till it causes an issue ince the exhaust is one piece to just about the cat. In a 96 I would replace it since the exhaust manifold is two piece right below that bracket since the split can contribute to the upper manifold piece tendaency to split. I have a 96 EX that suffered from such a maniford crack My 99 EX has not experienced this but it as you know is also a two piece although the location of the O2 sensor on the 96 vs 99 is different and might be a contributing factor. What would I do if this bracket was on my 99-- I would lieave it. In my 96 I would replace it..

Thanks for the valuable input.

Does using a nut/bolt combo have any advantage ? Genuinely asking, does it make it easier to remove ?
To me, I just do what I can to get it back on there. If the stud breaks off I'm going to get the rest of it out and look for a grade 8 nut/bolt combo. Move on.

Even though Tony sucks on his sack most of the day, he does know what he's talking about.
The heat shield is hiding whether or not the stud snapped. If you can see through to the other side, you can reuse the existing stud. If you can't then it's just like Tony mentioned.
The bracket on the other hand, that is plainly broken and for me, I'd have to replace it, it would bug me otherwise.
