2013 Accord sport cvt, Catalytic converter code
2013 accord sport cvt, 163K mi.
im 2nd owner since ~100K mi. Around 120K mi CEL started came on occasionally and now 2 times between oil changes. Independent shop and autizone CEL checking always show p0420 (cat converter).
CEL turns on randomly and turns off itself, no flashing. I always stay on top of all maintenance jobs and occasionally visit dealer service center to do routine maintenance stuff. But somehow never went to dealer center with CEL.
I tried to use 91/93 premiuem gas but CEL came on again.
my questions;
1. Is this always cat converter issue?
2. Average life span of cats?(mileage or years)
3. Anyrhing I can do before replacing the cat? Like cleaning or cat gasket replacement or o2 senser replacement?
3. Can dealer service center give a definitive answer what is wrong? (I heard p0420 is not always cat issue)
3. Does Aftermarket cat solve the issue? (Magna flow. I live in the NYC so emission test is strict
4. If I continue to drive with "cat efficency below threshold" for a while (a year, 40K mi +) what consequences can occur?
Thanks again

my questions;
1. Is this always cat converter issue?
%99.9 of the time it is.
2. Average life span of cats?(mileage or years)
Around 100k. Modern cats are pretty small and have a shorter lifespan than older cats
3. Anyrhing I can do before replacing the cat? Like cleaning or cat gasket replacement or o2 senser replacement?
Possibly. The substrate can be coated in crap from using cheap gas for years, so a cleaner like SeaFoam might help, however answer 2 still stands.
3. Can dealer service center give a definitive answer what is wrong? (I heard p0420 is not always cat issue)
Ideally. However in my experience most dealers have been taken over by corporate entities,who subsequently fire the higher paid(experienced) technicians. So its a crap shoot these days. Try using Yelp to find a good shop in your area
3. Does Aftermarket cat solve the issue? (Magna flow. I live in the NYC so emission test is strict
Only a CARB approved aftermarket cat will solve the issue. They are required to last 5 years or 50k miles, so they will be properly loaded with the necessary amount of noble metals. Lesser cats last any where from 1 day(literally) to a couple of years
4. If I continue to drive with "cat efficency below threshold" for a while (a year, 40K mi +) what consequences can occur?
Birds will fall from the sky, polar ice caps will melt, Greta Thornburg will visit you in your dreams and say "how dare you!!" over and over again.
Other than that, nothing will happen to the vehicle itself.
