Default Vtec problems

Just put in a jdm b16a obd2a. Motor and ecu are stock just have a straight pipe. Something seems off with the vtec cross over but I’m not sure as this is my first vtec. It almost seems like it starts to engage then doesn’t ? Or am I just stupid and that’s how it is. You can hear it in the video

It sounds like it starts to engage and then regresses back to non-vtec operation almost immediately.

thats what I thought. Do you think it’s a bad vtec solenoid? I’m not getting a cel and the oil isn’t low

JDM ECU's do not have a VTP (pressure switch circuit), so it is likely that you do not have enough oil volume to keep the VTEC system locked up mechanically... assuming your solenoid is working properly. Testing the solenoid by replacing yours with a known good one eliminates that possibility... and if that is not it, you have either an oil pump/pickup restriction or the main bearings are worn and allowing too much oil pressure to bleed off.

Good luck.

Try cleaning the vtec screen or replacing it. And make sure your oil level is not low on your dipstick.

Any check engine codes?

Trash in the screen is an indicator that you have other problems like I have suggested above... metal has to come from somewhere... as long as it isn't simply oil sludge built up on the screen.
