New Honda owner need some help about my engine
So just recently bought a 97 hatch civic. On the block I found D16Y8. My oem cat/headers are cracked and welded but I need a new one. So I went part hunting on Facebook,OfferUp and craigslist. Make story short I found a header (not oem) then the guy looked at my engine and told me I have a y8(vtec)bottom and a y7 top. 1st question is why would somebody do that? 2nd should I look for a y8 or y7 oem header/cats 3rd where can I find a guide that tell me what year and car model I can pull parts from? Thank for the help in advance IM SO LOST PLEASE HELP
DX hatch?
1) the blocks are interchangeable. if the original Y7 was damaged (spun a bearing- which they seem prone to doing, had low compression, tossed a rod..ect) and a Y8 block was readily available or cheap, the easiest thing to do to fix the engine is just swap the bottom end and keep everything else original. a complete Y8 swap would require more work (and parts which cost money...)
2) any exhaust manifold/header for '88-'00 model year civic with a single cam (D-series) will bolt up to your engine. however, you're cat. converter is built into the manifold. generally, if you get anything other than stock replacement (D16Y7, '96-'00 DX, LX) you will need to have a cat. added under the car to pass emissions. i can confirm that a factory Y8 manifold will mate up to the rest of the exhaust without a cat... but it stinks, literally.
I'm sure there are plenty of guides around with even more info. try a google search with "site:honda-tech.com/forums" at the end for the best results.

As far as I know the 6th gen isn't too different from the 5th gen and neither the intake manifold or the exhaust manifold are transmission specific. The area that can be transmission specific would likely be in the throttle body, but I'm not sure that applies to the 6th gen like it does the 5th gen.
Exhaust manifold is same no matter the transmission. IACV on auto equipped Y8 intake manifold is 3-wire, throttle body mounted like the Y7. Not compatible with manual, Y8 conversion. If you buy a complete Y8 swap, you'll need it to be from a manual
