Hi everyone, I have a 98 EX. Before i bought the car, the previous owner blew up the factory y8, and for whatever reason replaced it with a non-vtec y7. My question is, how can i tell which transmission is in the car? Did they stick with the factory tranny when they did the swap or did they have/buy a whole y7 motor and tranny and slap it in? I'd also like to know what are the differences in the y7 and y8 transmissions, as i am planning on getting as much performance out of my na sohc? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Near the fill plug on the transmission there's a code stamped in the transmission case A000 is Y7, B000 is Y5 or Y8. A designates 35mm (small) diff bearings. B designates 40mm (large) diff bearings. The transmissions are externally identical. The biggest practical difference for most people is the Y8 is geared a fair bit shorter and lower for better acceleration at the expense of fuel mileage. Just be careful when buying a used transmission as a Y5 and Y8 both share the same B000 stamping but are geared very differently.
That helps a lot, ill check and see what tranny i have in the morning, thanks. And with that being said, what are the best d series transmissions for acceleration, top speed, ect. Or where is a good place to go to get all this imformation?
D16Z6 and D16Y8 are the most performance oriented D-series transmissions you're going to find in the US. They're both geared the same. Z6 has aluminum forks, Y8 has steel forks.

ok i looked in from the top under the hood, and think i can see the stamp, if it is indeed in the little circle stamp right above the fill plug, but i cant even get close to seeing what it says due to the angle and how far down it sits in the motor bay. It looks like if i jack the car up and remove the passenger wheel i may be able to see it but idk im not sure. Is this indeed the stamp (been researching how to identify honda trannys and looks like the pics ive seen, small circle stamp), and how can i get to it to read it? Is there not a way i can judge witch tranny i have by my 3rd gears top speed or something? Thanks.
you can put in your specifics (tire dimensions and RPM) if they're different from what I entered, by following the link.
the green is the Z6/Y8 ratios, purple is Y7/(base trim). i put in 3000 RPM as "max" so that you won't have to wring out your engine to get results. make a mental note of your speed in each gear at 3k RPM. compare to these numbers for a reasonably certain answer.

Wow, thats pretty cool, thanks. Im still going to eventually check my stamp because ive suspected my speedo to be off since i purchased the car. And im running 14" steels on front with reccomened tire size and 18's in the back. Sort of trashy looking i think but its how i bought it and ive yet to have extra money to put into wheels yet with all the regular maintenance ive had to put into it. The car was obviously neglected when i bought it. Also im not sure which wheel the speedo is attached to, im assuming one of the rears since when i break traction i havent noticed my speedo reflecting that. (Doing a burnout) lol

speedo runs off of the diff carrier in the trans. One wheel spinning in first gear with the other still or barely moving won't register much on the gauge.
The difference between the two gearboxes is obvious once you've driven both... But I guess that doesn't help you much
Thanks everyone for the help, I finally mustered up enough ambition to pull my car on ramps and crawl under there to see. Turns out I have the stock ex tranny, B000!!! Also found the transmission mount bolts were only about halfway threaded into the frame. Lol. Now on to looking into doing a y7/y8 mini-me swap!
