Default General noob questions

em1

1. Can I redline each gear(1-5) before up-shifting without damaging clutch or engine? I think my friend told me in gear 1 you should not exceed 5000rpm otherwise you will wear the clutch. Is it true and what about engine damage?

2. The manual gives maximimum speeds im mph for each gear. I notice the rpm can be regardless of speed being travelled. So should one not exceed the maximum speeds regardless of whether they have reached redline or not?

3. Can I drive around in gear 2 all day without wearing or causing any damage?

Thanks

1. if the car is warmed up, feel free to shift at redline, but in my experience stock b16a stop making power around 7600 rpm or so

2. idk what to say, if accelerating run up to redline as needed ...cruising at about 50 mph or above put it in 5th

3. not sure the logic here

easier to get vtec when needed. if your driving around on higher gears it takes forever to get higher rpm.

downshifting is when you slow down and gear down with it right? thats not what im describing. the problem with downshifting is you need to slow down to second gear to get vtec usually.

Since I want to have it on at will(without having to slow down from gear 4), thats why i'm asking if can drive around in second gear, then I can vtec without having to downshift, i can get it at will. so that wouldnt be considered downshifting and does it make sense why i wont to drive around in gear 2. so again besides fuel consumption will it be ok to do that?

thanks

Based on the threads you’ve posted, you dont possess the fundamental or mechanical knowledge to drive a stick shift vehicle.

Either we’re all being trolled right now, or you need someone to teach you how to drive stick. Your comprehension of what people are trying to explain to you over the internet, clearly is not so good.

Please stop driving the car before you destroy it.

Why don't you actually address the things I'm saying, like my last post.

I've been driving manual cars for the past 10 years without problems but they didn't have vtec and I'd take a corner at an appropriate speed and gear then come out and accelerate. I wouldn't have to worry about how to get vtec again cause it wasn't there.

And why doesn't anyone answer if I can drive around in 2nd gear all day. I wouldnt be able to do that in other cars because as you exceeded 20mph I guess it woud strain some part of the car. With the em1, the manual actually says you can go 1st gear up to 35mph, 2nd gear up to 54mph, 3rd gear up to 72 mph etc so why don't you address that. At the same time I said i want to do it cos I like to stay in vtec. At the same time you lot said I can redline in any gear but when trying to do so you would may exceed the above limits given in the manual so why all the confusing information.

No you should not drive around in 2nd gear all day.

The higher the rpm, the more wear and stress are happening on engine components. This is true with vtec or without.

2-4k rpm is a normal driving range that you should be in at least 90% of the time on the street. Vtec should only be reached when doing a wide open throttle pull to accelerate as fast as possible, or when racing.

In other words, drive it exactly the same as you would any other manual car and stop worrying about vtec.

So long as you change your oil the engine components will be ok right? You have said vtec should be used in accelerating or when racing, so as someone else said in racing they stick to the lowest gear possible and at high rpms, doesn't that mean they are causing stress and wear oin the engine? So what are you saying, people doing track days will need an engine rebuild after a few track days?

No, it means that the harder it is driven regularly, the shorter the life of the engine will be. For instance, if well maintained and not driven hard, it might last 300k miles before needing a rebuild. If redlined every single time it is driven, it might wear out by 150k.

These are just random figures given as an example, since there is no way of telling how long any particual engine is going to last. Maintenance and driving style are both major factors though.

who in the **** could logically think cruising around in second is a good idea? even in a track situation you wouldn't be in second that much with a b16 transmission. op, stop. stop now.

By wide open throttle I think you mean completely flooring the gas pedal right? When I initially bought this car I was flooring it several times a day, my mechanic told me to lay off because the clutch might wear out after a week. Is that correct or might it go a lot longer since you say vtec should be used with flooring it. I imagine most people vtec 1-2 times a day. If I floor it for vtec 2 times a day for 2 quarter miles how long might the clutch last?

Also what if i steadily build up the revs to engage vtec, isnt that better than flooring it since the latter does more harm(at least to clutch)?

Clutch life has more to do with your shifting and launching from a stop, then it does with revving out the engine. As long as you don’t burn it between gears or when launching it should be fine.

So you're saying if I floor it in gear 1 this will wear the clutch but if I move off in gear 2 then upshift to gear 2 and floor it that won't wear the clutch?

This post reminds me a lot of myself when I first started driving stick. I came to a forum seeking help after a friend told me I could shift without ever pushing in the clutch.. We all start somewhere.

Yeah, but sounds like these guys learnt everything in an instant. I had this car for a week and realized I was damaging it so I was looking for some support, don't get why my story is so unbelievable.
