Default Want some advise before getting into this build

What's up guys, I have a 1998 Civic EX 5 speed with the d16y8 engine. I'm looking to do a turbo build soon (hopefully) and was wondering what the best turbo and parts will be for a stock internal build. I plan on getting my engine looked at and fixed if it needs it and I'm gonna get a new clutch very soon. Also going to get new injectors and maybe a new fuel pump as well. Looking to get about 7-10 psi so I can be a bit over 200whp. I'm trying to stay around $2,000 for this build (give or take) but alot of what I've seen is people buying Ebay turbos and kits and I'm not sure how much I trust that. What do you guys think? Is there even such a thing as a good Ebay turbo?

back in the days I started out with a basic Greddy turbo kit and had my bone stock Civic si running low 13’s (best 13.05 @105mph). Only added basics such as fuel pump / coil / intercooler /colder plugs . I ran race fuel on the track and around 8-9 psi 10 was max I ever hit. I think I got about as much out of a stock SOHC as you could get. If you ever think you would want more than 200hp....... wait and do a swap.

A small t25 or t28 is best for max potential on a stock y8, and super fun with the low end and mid range torque it will produce.

I ran low 13’s on a stock y8 and t25 at around 11-12psi and it held up for years daily driven like that. Just make sure to get a conservative tune, the stock y8 bottom end won’t handle much timing.

For your budget unfortunately you would have to find a deal on a used turbo. A good new turbo would cost more than half your budget. Consider the need for engine management, injectors, clutch, etc and that $2k doesn’t get you very far.

When all was said and done I built mine for around $3k, and it was about the cheapest one could be built half way reliably. That was with purchasing the entire turbo kit used for $1500. The other half of my budget went to supporting mods. Clutch, DSM 450cc injectors, oil lines, wideband, and tuning myself on Crome free with a chipped P28 and a chip burner.

Stay away from ebay turbos.

i forgot about having to change my clutch, I roasted the stock one immediately. It’s been 15 years since I did that setup
