Default Engines

Ok sorry if this sounds lame. I'm new to the import's this year. I have a 05 civic LX SE with a 1.7 liter. My question is I want to turbo it and get 300-350hp. So can you do this with the 1.7 or do I need to do an engine swap. I. Trying to Decide if I want to put a lot of money into the 4cyl. I have a buddy that builds tube chassis. He told me he could build one for a V8 Rwd. Just trying to figure out which way to go.

Should probably think about what it is you really want/need out if the civic. A daily driver, occasional driver, or project/track toy?

There is no comparing the civic at any level to a custom built V8 Rwd race car, so I'm not gonna go there...

Reliably? You'd have to spend a ton of money on a D17 to make reliable 350whp. However, a swap and simple bolt-on's could get that easily.

One other thought, do you know what 350whp is like in a fwd civic? Have you ever ridden or driven in one at that power level? I ask because you say you are newer to imports. 350whp is not the same in a Honda as it might be in other vehicles.

350 in a civic no I haven't. I've only had 1 other import and it was a 1988 conquest tsi. That one had a bigger turbo. It was on the dyno was if i remember right 325 hp.

Alright well the civic will weigh only slightly less than your conquest did, but being front wheel drive with an open diff, and very limited to what tires you can fit up front, 350whp is almost unusable on the street. Unless you are willing to invest a lot into the car for putting down the power. You will also want an engine swap to achieve that goal. Just a lot less hassle than building up the D17.

With a lot of time invested in getting the car set up for drag racing, 350whp could get you into the 11's or even 10's. But that would look completely different than how you would set up the car for street use, or autocross, or circuit racing. So it comes back to the question, what do you want to do with the car.

Ok then. You'll want a swap for sure.

Ok so I seen on Vtech academy that they did a k24 swap for right around 3200. They said the motor was 450 out of a 05 accord.

Someone is bound to hit you with this... Vtech is a phone.

VTEC is Honda technology.

And I do not believe the Accord had K series motors in them, if I recall they are the J series 6 cylinder motors. K is from Acura's, some later model Civic Si's.

K24 I believe is from the Acura TSX

Sure you don't want a turbo 2.0L?

Better? For what? The differences start with overall displacement. (2.0 Liter versus 2.4 Liter)

They both equally have their strengths and weaknesses. So, the differences will be negligible in the effort of trying to "smoke a new Type R Civic". I would choose what you can find for the best value (best price for condition). It'll probably be a K24A1, K24A4, or K20A3. Throwing a turbo on any of those will easily net enough power to out accelerate a stock Type R.
