Snow tires: Is wider really better?
in snow, wider is not better. say you have to tires, 245s and some 195s. in the snow the 195s will give better traction because they will cut through the snow. the 245s will slide ON-TOP of the snow, which is not good. to slide. more narrow is better.

yea, narrower is better. for winter I have some 185's.
edit: right now I have these mounted on some steelies that I think are 5" wide, can I put these tires on my prelude rims, which I think are either 6 or 6.5" wide, don't remember.

i'll always tought that the narrow the tire is, the best the traction was on snow because of the WRC skinnies tires. Everytime i see them i laugh, cuz they are funny. I've seen that the same concept aplies to mud, the taller and narrower the tire is, the better is the traction.

That's right. Now you wouldn't necessaily want to go to extremes, because a tire surface too narrow would cause the grip on ice to become hazardous, unless your tires are nailed. Also, stability on dry surfaces is compromised if you put on tires that are too narrow.
Tall and narrow is the best for deep snow or mud (unless you;re a "mud bogger"
). But unless you drive in the deep stuff all the time it is best to compromise. 70 or 75 series tires on most cars work the best if you get a lot of snow and on light trucks up to an 85 series works pretty good. At least here in Illinois.Best tire I ever had on ice short of studs or chains was a 70 series but I haven't tried any if the new "ice" compounds. I'm too cheap and we only get ice once or twice a winter on average around here. If it's too bad I just stay put.

I used to run 185 65 15 studded snows, that accord was like a tank. The highway performance just blows though. I'm getting H-rated performance snow tires this season.
