Swapped a d16y8 into my 89 hatch, but I'm unable to properly set the timing because of surging idle.... Anybody know a good way around this? I set the timing by ear/feel and the car isn't bogging or anything, but I know it's not dead on. Already went through all the steps to eliminate the bouncing idle, brand new iacv, no vacuum leaks, TPS is set properly, air bubbles have been bled from the cooling system. The company that made my chipped ECU says I just need to get it tuned (currently running obd1 d16z6 basemap on the y8 with a 63mm TB and portmatched intake manifold).

Soooo anybody know any tricks for correctly setting the timing until I can afford to get it tuned?

General consensus is that I need to get it tuned to fix the idle, I have tried everything else. Can't get it tuned til I can set the timing properly.

Are the intake/throttle body the only mods you have on there?

Maybe start with a base map meant for the Y8 instead of the Z6?

 

General consensus from a guy that literally only professionally tunes Honda's for a living, and everyone else I've talked to including the company that made my ECU. Mods are intake headers TB exhaust, that's it. ECU company says the y8 basemap won't make a difference​ in the way it wants to idle, and won't sell me a chip with the iacv cut out of the system...

 

You have a vacuum leak or your IACV isn't working properly. You should be able to get it to idle. I have run a d16a6 ECU on a y8 and it idles fine. If you are running a6/z6/y8 stock map in your ECU it will idle. Unless you have a really messed up program, it's not the ECU.

 

Y8 doesn't have a FITV so it's may never have a perfect idle.
It seems some people luck out and others always have a funky idle and sometimes stall.
Switching out to a different manifold fixes it.

The surging you are talking about sounds pretty extreme if you can't even time it.
Very common when the IACV needs to be cleaned and tightened up.
