Do I need to use phosphate fee coolant?
I changed my coolant the other day and used this brand called Mototech. I thought they were all the same, but now I read here that I should have used Honda coolant. The Mototech stuff has phosphates. Should I change it again or is it fine?
You MUST use a coolant that is silicate and phosphate free. Honda Coolant and several others are this way. You cannot mix Honda coolant with Dexcool either-trust me on this one.
What you need to do is completely flush the cooling system with plain water and after it is cooled down again-fill it with Honda coolant or equivalent Dexcool. Both will work at a 50/50 mix.
The reason for this issue is that Honda builds the engine and water pump using aluminum. The silicates and other things in conventional coolant will attack the metals and corrode them-literally eat them away.
Good luck.

i just use extended life prestone. its suppose to be silicate and phosphate free. saved 5 whole dollars by not going to the dealer.
I believe that there is a version of the Prestone coolant that meets the Honda spec.. I do know from talking with the engineers at Peak that they also have a product. Be absolutely certain of what you buy and again-DO NOT mix brands or types. I paid $13 for a gallon of Honda concentrate (I know this is the retail on it)-but I also know what the label says.
