starting and cooling system problems
Hi new here,
Have a 1990 honda accord exi with f22a9 engine. 224000km on it
car struggles to start have to pump gas pedal to get it started eventualy starts, runs very rough then starts idleing fairly normal, could be better. Engine light comes on and stays on somtimes.
I have cleaned out fast idle thermo valve and idle air control valve.
throttle body taken off completly and given good clean, found it to be oily and air duct had a lot of oil in it also.
put new spark plugs in it
Thermo fans not coming on, cant get air lock out of cooling system. Drained and bled system twice. Had broken hose and was replaced.
In the last couple of months the car has had
Timing belt kit put in
new pcv valve
new harmonic balancer as the bolt snapped off.
The distributor is new and alternator is new.
if anyone has any idea where to go from here it would be great help or is this car ready for the wrecking yard?
Thanks in advance

Recheck the mechanical timing. Make sure it's spot on. If you do not know how to do this, have someone else double check for you, someone other than the original mechanic who did the timing belt.
Check base idle. It should be around 500-600 with the iacv unplugged. Keep in mind the first big white line after 0 is 500 not 200.
Compression test the motor.

I went out and started the car today havent started for about 6 days, its been cool weather, the car started with no hesitation, thats bizar, could there be something else? Other then the suggested things to look at as mentioned above
Switched it off for a moment, tried to restart engine and it hesitates, struggles and sputters and stalls, if i am to start pumping gas pedal it will eventually start
Does this car often sit around alot?
I just went out and tried starting my 1999 Civic 220k after it sat about a week or so, and it took me about 7 long cranks to finally get it going.
My guess is the fuel. Once I start driving mine again Im gonna mix in a few gallons of e85 to help it out. If no change, Im gonna swap the fuel filter out.
GL with yours.

When was the last time you clean out your EGR chamber?
clogged EGR chamber will cause similar symptoms you described. Take a look at it. It should be next to your fuel injectors. You just need to buy a new gasket, but you could re-use the old gasket just fine (if it's made of metal). I re-used mine w/o any problem. Some dealers don't even carry them or don't know what that is.
I clean out mine once every 90K mile or so, and it was full of carbon deposit every time. A clogged chamber is not a death sentence to your car, but it would idle rough, causing check engine light to stay on for sometime then goes away on its own. Your fuel economy would also goes down.
It should be a routine maintenance like replacing cabin air filter.

Also search this board for EGR chamber or egr cleaning and see what you can find. You tube may have video instruction step by step but am not sure if it's legal on this board to post an outside link or not so do that on your own.

Do the Australian F22A9 engines have EGR Valves, cant seem to one on this car, where would it be on this car?
There looks like a blanking plate which looks like the out lind of a egr valve down below where throttle body is between thermostat on manifold

Car wouldnt start today so took out spark plugs to check them, found two of them had water in them, opend oil cap and there was whit milky stuff on and can see it in valve cove.
I gues its cracked head or blown head gasket on this, oil on dipstick was clean no white stuff

Definitely a blown head gasket. Could be a cracked head to. A cracked head isn't something you can always see. I only had a cracked head once and had to have it checked to find the crack to confirm it. Get the fans working before replacing the head gasket or you'll just 32nd up having to replace it again. The head gasket probably blew as a result of overheating. Clean the egr as well. I think that most of your problems stem from the head gasket. Hopefully the head isn't cracked. The important thing is not to drive your car untill the head gasket is replaced and its determined the head isn't cracked. You will also want to replace your oil and filter and have your radiator flushed to remove any oil left in there. White foamy oil is from water contamination and if water can get into your oil, oil can get into your water. I'd say most of your problems can stem from a blown head gasket.
Also do all the other checks too. Especially reset the timing as mentioned above. Hell, give it a complete tune up. Unless you catch the blown gasket right away it will throw other systems off but usually without damage. The most effected is the timing.

It depends on cost of repairs compared to the cost to replace the vehicle. Here in central California parts for hondas aren't that expensive but the cars themselves can be due to popularity with enthusiasts. Things might be different where you're at.
