Default B16a or Vtec

So I want to do a engine swap in my 93 del sol S, and I've been looking into it and think I know vaguely what I want. So I would like it if anyone has a suggestion for me. Which engine would be cheaper and less modifications to install, the del sol Vtec or the b16a? And would I have to change transmission's if I go with the Vtec? I'm guessing the Vtec would be cheaper and easier to do but would like some input

Am I missing something here? Isn't the Del Sol VTEC a B16?

I thought mine is a d16z though I could be wrong, I live in Wisconsin and it's damn cold outside right now and though I've had the hood up a couple of times I never looked at the factory spec's tag

Del Sol S is a d15b7, Del Sol Si is D16z6, Del Sol V-Tec is b16a.

Search the internet. Read. Lots.

Value thread. Not tech.

:deep breath:

What are your goals? Why do you want to do an engine swap? What are you going to primarily use your car for?

Nobody can answer any of your questions until you explain what it is you want.

Basic.

Your car is an ODB1 engine (google it) so swapping in an engine from 92-95 will be the easiest and cheapest swap.

VTEC (google it) isn't a type of engine. You can't swap a VTEC or B16 in. What you're asking about is the D16Z6 SOHC VTEC engine or the B16A3(ODB1) or B16A2(ODB2) both DOHC VTEC engines. There are also B18C1 and B18C5 engine swaps that are possible. The latter being an ODB2 only engine.

USDM (google it) VTEC engines: D16Z6, D16Y8, B16A3, B16A2, B17A1, B18C1, B18C5
JDM (google it) VTEC engines: D15B, ZC, B16A, B16B, B18C

There are more, but that's a good start.

D series transmissions are for D series engines. B series transmissions are for B series engines.

So there are D series options and B series options. Both are pretty easy with no modification required. A B series swap will cost you. More!

Start with GOOGLE. Put in Del Sol Engine swap. Yes, there's lots of information out there. Read it all, twice. Form your own ideas and opinions based on other's experiences. Make choices. Start posting with questions you CAN'T find the answer to on the internet. Not questions you're unwilling to find answers to.

If your internet access is limited, here's another option;

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&biw=&bih=&q=Honda+Engine+Swap+Aaron+Bonk&gbv=2&sa=X&as_q=&nfpr=&spell=1&ved=0ahUKEwjL0JHd48rKAhUDvIMKHXmdAdMQvwUIEQ

Honda Engine Swaps by Aaron Bonk. It's a book.

Also, download the Helm Factory Service Manual. Here's the search results http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&biw=&bih=&q=Del+sol+factory+service+manual&gbv=2&sa=X&as_q=&nfpr=&spell=1&ved=0ahUKEwiFrYKA5crKAhULl4MKHcnwBSAQvwUIEQ

Also, also...

There were two Del Sol variants made in 1993.

Del Sol S (engine code D15B7) SOHC non-VTEC

Del Sol Si (engine code D16Z6) SOHC VTEC

If you have an S trim level Del Sol and a D16Z6 engine your car has already had an engine swap.

The way to know for sure what engine your car was originally equipped with is the VIN.

The first six digits of your VIN will be either:

Del Sol S = JHMEG1 = D15B7

Del Sol Si = JHMEG6 = D16Z6

It's too cold to go outside to check doesn't cut it. Come back when you can identify both your VIN and engine code.

Where to find your engine code:

There are three places to find your VIN on your car. Other places should include your title, insurance card, bill of sale, etc.

Lower left corner of your windshield:

Left side door jam:

Just save your money for a GSR, a b16a is like a kids toy, fun at first but gets boring fast.

Nothing tech here, just opinions. Nothing to even debate over...because everyone has different preferences. For some reason you seem stuck on that b16a but you want a reason and that reason has to come from someone else. Why?

So that was the questions I was holding back.

What's the OP's budget for this engine swap?

What's your end goal? And how much do you have to spend to get there. The fact that you're asking about the cheapest swap is a pretty good clue to your intent. Plus you have wheel bearing issues and want to do a front end conversion.

What kind of shape is you Del Sol in? Pics?

I'll kindly wait for your responses to the questions and then we can plan a solid direction for you based on the responses. We can benchmark your progress as you keep us updated and provide you insight.

Or we can watch you post the hell out of this forum and never actually do anything. That's nothing new either.
