1991 civic dx 1.5L crank pulley questions?
I'm working on a friends car that the timing belt broke on. I have a couple of issues. The first is the crank pulley, I managed to get the bolt out with a home made tool, but in the process broke the pulley.
1. The first question is, what tool is used to hold the pulley safely when removing the bolt? I have the honda tool that works on newer models, but this one is different.
2. I have a crank pulley from a 1999 civic 1.6 non vtec. What are the odds I could use this pulley in place of the broken one?

Question 1 I always just put a punch threw the hole in pulley and it will catch bottom of the block but this was with the belt on or head off so didn't have worry about hitting valves when turn the crank and unbolt and wiggled off
My pulley has a hex for a special tool.
And, all 1..6 1.5 pulleys should be the same. Just as long as the timing marks are the same, the acc. belts should align okay

Mine just a 17mm 6sided bolt don't see why yours would or mine would be different? If your talking about other pulley try this info http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/cranktool/
It seems that the 92+ have the different crank pulleys. they have the hex shape for the special tool and the 17mm goes through the middle. Mine doesn't have the hex shape, the only place to hold it is by the small holes. The special tool seems to hold by going through 2 of the holes.
Well, I have a 1999 civic for my personal car and I recently swapped the motor so I had a spare harmonic balancer from the old engine. I tried that and it appears to be slightly larger although the timing marks do line up. If I were to use this I would think the belts would become the issue. I'm not sure they would align properly.
I would be curious if the 92-95 d15 crank pulley would work on the 91 civic? anyone have any experience with this?
The current problem I have is that nobody makes this part anymore and the only one I found was on ebay for $80. I'd pay $80 for it but it is coming out of California (I live in Missouri) and that would leave the car down for more time. Its an elderly lady whose car I'm fixing for free and trying to get her wheels back so people don't have to haul her around.

I never used the hex tool, just put a large pry bar in the flywheel check plate and an impact on the crank bolt.

I have a pulley from a 92-95 civic. My old one fell apart when I tried to have the a/c and powersteering ribs rmoved.
They are the same diameter, timing marks. only the ribs don't line up exactly. My alternator belt is about 0-1 mm off to the left in this one.
But it hasn't hurt anything.
I would advise sticking anything in the holes in the pulley itself. Those were drilled to balance it.
remove the flywheel check plate and use the flywheel to prevent it from turning, soak the bolt in WD-40
Also, don;t pay 80.00 for it. I got mine on ebay for 30.00
Try craigslist too.

88-91 pulleys do not all have the hex provision. Honda does have a special tool to bolt on the frame however you can loop some chains around it held with a breaker bar to get the bolt off. Otherwise impact gun. If your bolt is a 19mm you can try this socket.

I'm going to see if the guy I found for $80 will negotiate a bit. if anyone has an extra one let me know...
You are exactly right, I found that advanced carries the 92-95 pulleys I took the 88-91 pulley in and compared it. The a/c compressor pulley is the same, but the alternator pulley for the 92-92 is 4 ribbed and the p/s is totally different. It sounds like I am going to have to hold out for an exact fit pulley. I have found 3 crank pulleys without powersteering in scrap yards today which sucks.
