SRSystem repair/ airbags
We are repairing a 2012 Honda Civic LX, light collision damage on the front. For some reason the passengers air bag went off and the drivers didn't. Anyone know how this could happen?
Both seat belts went off as well.
A scan does not show the control module showing any codes. How can this be with an airbag blown and 2 belts deployed?

I was at the track last summer and went out course. I hit a few hard bumps in the grass and the passenger side airbag and curtain airbag both deployed... it happens and it's mostly likely related to the airbag sensor sensing something on that particular side.
what type of code reader are you using? a normal code reader for cars will not be able to pick up anything related to the airbag system as for that you will need to the special tool that the dealer is using.
It is an air-bag code reader. It is showing both belts blown and the right side airbag. That is the obvious damage, but it is not showing anything wrong with the control box.
I took it to a well known garage that works on such systems.
Not a Honda dealer but has a good rep.
Next question: With seat belts blown, do I have to replace entire seat belt including the buckle, or is the retractor end enough?

When a seatbelt deploys, the buckle deploys as well; both have to be replaced.
Vladd Do you know that the buckles deploy for sure, Another Honda tech said this:
Quote:
Just the retractor(s) that were deployed.
AFAIK that model doesn't use explosive charges on the buckles (but many other cars sure do)...So unless physically damaged-- the buckles should be OK
Not trying to start a war. It is just that I will be spending hundreds more if I need the buckles. THANKS.

NOTE:
• If the harness is broken or damaged in the areas relevant to the replacement parts shown below, replace the harness, do not repair it.
• Before doing any SRS repairs, check for DTCs with the HDS; refer to the appropriate Civic Service Manual, for the less obvious deployed components (front seat belt tensioners, front impact sensors, side impact sensors, etc.)
• Do not replace the ODS unit unless it is physically damaged or a specific fault was found during DTC troubleshooting because it could complicate troubleshooting other DTCs.
• After a vehicle collision, do the ODS unit operation check; refer to the appropriate Civic Service Manual.
• After a vehicle collision, inspect the front seat active head restraints; refer to the appropriate Civic Service Manual.
After a collision where the front seat belt tensioners deployed, replace these items:
• SRS unit
• Front seat belt(s)
• Front impact sensor(s)
After a collision where the front airbag(s) deployed, replace these items:
• SRS unit
• Deployed front airbag(s)
• Front seat belt(s)
• Front impact sensor(s)
After a collision where the side airbag has deployed, replace the items for the side(s) that deployed:
• SRS unit
• Deployed side airbag(s)
• Front seat belt(s)
• Side impact sensor(s) (first)
• Side impact sensor(s) (second)
• B-pillar lower trim (4-door)
• Seat frame and related parts
After a collision where a side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the items for the side(s) that deployed:
• SRS unit
• Deployed side curtain airbag(s)
• Front seat belt(s)
• Side impact sensor(s) (first)
• Side impact sensor(s) (second)
• A-pillar trim
• B-pillar upper trim
• C-pillar trim (4-door)
• Quarter pillar trim (2-door)
• Front grab handle
• Rear grab handle (4-door)
• All related trim clips
• Sunvisor
• Headliner
After a moderate to severe side or rear collision, inspect for any damage on the side curtain airbag or other related components. Replace the components as needed.
During the repair process, inspect these areas:
• Inspect all the SRS wire harnesses. Replace, do not repair, any damaged harnesses.
• Inspect the cable reel for heat damage. If there is any damage, replace the cable reel.
After the vehicle is completely repaired, turn the ignition switch to ON (II). If the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off, the SRS is OK. If the indicator does not function properly, use the HDS to check for the DTCs; refer to the appropriate Civic Service Manual. If you cannot retrieve a code, do the SRS Symptom Troubleshooting.
