Default 93 Civic DX wiper malfunctioning

Hi folks, I recently experienced a problem w/my wipers. Suddenly the low & high functions completely stopped working while Intermit would function normally. Also, mist will not work, although you can spray but the wipers wont respond in either Low or High position.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help!

Found various diagnostics for wipers.

I have checked the continuity of the wiper switch & it passes, including oddly low & high. I also disassembled the cowling to gain access to wiper motor & tested it. By testing the motor by applying + & - directly from battery the wiper motor operates at both low & high speeds.

I'm at al loss. What's left in to check? The ICU? To recapp the wiper suddenly stopped woring in the low & high positions but will work in the intermitt however mist will not work either. The unit can still stray fluid...

Any wiper wizards out there?

Switch is the problem.

Use your multimeter to test the black ground wire in the switch connector.

thanks Ron. How do I test ground wire in connector? Simply check continuity between the ground wire & hot lead in the 8P connector?

Wiper problem seemed to coincide w/a diy Fragmare had posted which detailed the installation of one wire horns using the existing relay. The diy worked. Perhaps it was a coincidence but, the next time I attempted to use the wipers I discovered that they wouldn't run on low, high, or mist & would only wipe once in interm. I had looked at wiring diagrams before doing the diy. There doesn't seem to be a connection between the diy 2 black wires going into the horn relay & wiper. Did I overlooked something?

Prior to wiper issue, I became interested in upgrading my ICU to 6G to add functionality. "Identifying ICU" & your "'97 Civic Wiper/Washer fluid sprays.." prompted me to pick up an ICU from a '97 Civic. I pulled the ICU & 10P connector. The threads reference part number 38600-SO1-A11. The ICU I pulled had #38600-SO1-A1 . Is the A11 a typo?

Thanks for advice.

Test for continuity to body ground for black ground wire in the unplugged switch connector.

Brilliant! Thanks Ron!

Oddly, it appears that there's no continuity between ground (A position in wire harness) & body. I don't have a rear wiper but I noticed the harness has is plugged & has a similar 6P connector that plugs into a blank on my wiper switch. I tested that ground wire & there's continuity! Very strange. I think I'm going to depin the various wires & switch them rather than attempt to figure out where I lost continuity to ground. Please advise if you agree or insight into how this might have occurred.

Help! I thought this w/b relatively easy but I havent been able to de-pin 'em. I can't seem to figure out how to unlock the pin in the connector. Ugh! I found a threads on it but cant seem to get it to work.

How do you de-pin the 8P & 6P connectors on the back of the windshield wiper switch?

This w/b a virgin experience. What's the technique. Thanks!

Do you measure continuity to body ground at the black wire at pin G in the wire harness connector for the wiper switch?

I had a similar problem with a 94 del sol . The problem was the Integrated Control Unit which on the del sol contained the intermittent wiper relay module.
The ICU was a module piggybacked on the back of the underdash fuse box, it's about the size of a pack of cigarettes.

I went to a junkyard and pried one off a junker and swapped it with my old one. It worked. I opened my old one and it had burnt circuits.

I took your advice & checked body continuity; something I previously had overlooked. Oddly, there wasn't continuity at pin G on the harness. However since I don't have a rear wiper I checked the continuity at the corresponding ground wire position in the rear harness & there was continuity. My thought was to de pin & switch the 2 pins. However I don't know the correct technique to de pin the 8P & 6P connector. How do you do it?

Run a new black ground wire for pin G. It's broken.

I could run a new ground but I figured out how to depin & switch the unused ground that has continuity from the rear wiper, which I don't have, to corresponding front 10P ground position.

Sidebar pls Ron: Since I've got the column & switch apart, I picked up a 6G ICU & want to activate wipers when I spray fluid. I have to add a female pin black/Wht wire at pin 4 on the ICU & then soldier it to which wire in the front wiper 10P connector to gain the 3 wipes functionality after I activate the washers?

Thanks for the suggestion. Since everything was already apart, I actually picked a 6G ICU up from a 97 Honda Civic & plan to swap it in to upgrade a few functionalities. It's almost plug & play you need to add 1 wire & pin to the ICU connector & soldier it to a wire in wiper switch.

I think it's Grn/Blk in the if I'm reading my EG wiring diagram correctly but there are TWO Grn/Blk & was hoping to confirm which one w/Ron (a pro at wiring diagrams).
