Make sure the battery in the car is healthy enough to run the car. Make sure the terminals on the battery are clean and secure. If both of those are done, then the car should run even if the alternator is not working.
Any car with a computer is going to need a battery in the system. Old cars had a condenser, a coil (or were they the same thing?) And a distributor cap. That's it. Nothing sensitive to be affected by the electrical noise the alternator puts out. The battery behaves as an electrical shock absorber in the system to prevent the alternator damaging the ECU, it's there for a reason.
This is interesting. Cars run off the battery, and the alternator technically only charges the battery. Although most times a car will run if you remove the positive lead from battery(if it is in good working order).
Anyway, couple of things you can do. First have both alternator and battery tested. If you have access, put battery on a charger, see if it will take a charge. If it does, and the car starts and runs, then most likely alternator. Btw, if that's the case, and the battery light is on while it's running. Give alternator a good whack. Sometimes that'll fix the problem.

Sounds to me like your battery is completely shot due to the alternator being bad. Like it was posted above get a multimeter free at all HARBOR FREIGHTS with purchase of course check your battery level and then if your car stays running even with the jumper connected connect the positive lead to the alternator ground then the other to the battery ground and see what the alternator output is..... Or since I didn't see what kind of car it is you have I would just take out the alternator and battery to get it tested at a local Auto parts store.
Hmm if your battery tested fine..... Its a odd problem I would get the battery tested again just to be sure then search for any loose corrosive grounds. If the car started and ran fine before the clutch replacement retrace all your steps of the replacement any of the area you were in make sure everything electrical is connected.
Go ahead and try smacking your starter too LOL. I had a friends car come to me with what was a bad starter from the start we could jump the car and it'd start fine but wouldn't start on its own. Odd thing is if it was that alone your car should stay running.
