HAVE TO remove trans with engine?
Hey guys, one of my good friends blew the engine in his 95 Accord Ex (rod broke and poked a pretty hole in the block). He just ordered a jdm f22b vtec from HMO and should be receiving it by the end of the month.
I replaced a dying d16z6 with a jdm Zc vtec in my old 94 Civic so I told him I would help him. He showed me a youtube video he found of a guy replacing his engine in a 94-97 Accord and the guy said if it were a manual transmission we would have to take the transmission out with the engine, if its auto you can take just the engine out. Is this true? I pulled just the engine in my civic, although it was an auto.
Do we HAVE to take the manual transmission out with the engine? Or can pull just the engine and leave the trans in the car on the jack like I had planned?
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

I think the problem is that on the passenger side of the engine bay there's enough room to slide the trans off the engine, but on the driver's side there isn't enough room to slide the engine off the trans. You need to be able to pull the input shaft out of the clutch assy and with as little room as there is between the timing cover and the driver's side frame rail I don't see it happening easily.
I can't speak for the accords but for the 5 or so motors I have pulled from civics/integras it is much easier to pull both out together.
I pulled a transmission once and left the motor installed and I will never do it again. Best just to take them together

MT would need to be pulled is because of the input shaft goes into the back of the pilot bearing in the transmission. Not enough room to just pull the engine.
ATs just unbolt the TC from the drive plate and the engine is mostly clear of the transmission.

I recently swapped my engine and removed it with my 5 speed transmission attached. I need to swap again and I was thinking of doing the engine only because I leave the ac line connected and it’s very tight to remove the engine and transmission with the line very close to the transmission. It is obviously possible since I did it, but I wondered if it’s worth the hassle to remove the transmission first so I won’t have to be as careful in removing and installing the engine. Thanks.

Found out it was easier to just do as others have said, and just drop the subframe on the trans side, and pull it out.
Ive pulled the engine only, on an auto car, it was tight but it'll go. Right now I have a manual, and pulled them both together. To separate the two they need a good3-4", which you wouldn't have if you tried to leave transmission in the car and just move the engine.
Anyway, I removed the crank pulley, then allowed the tranny side to drop a bit while raising the engine side. Then when engine side cleared, tranny side had the necessary room to clear the left side trans mount. I pulled it by myself...using a leveler.
