Icon5 2002 Civic LX Questions

Hello, I am new to this forum because I bought a 2002 Civic a year ago. The engine is a D17A1 and the auto trans is BMXA. I recently took my car to be check for the AT trans is very slow in shifting especially between 2nd and 3rd and noticeable from 3rd to 4th. The engine is sluggish, driving up a not to steep hill I have to press hard on the gas pedal. Two different trans shops said I will need a my trans rebuild or replaced very soon. The car is my daily commuter. I was thinking of trying to find a D17A2 (Vtec) engine with an auto trans. I don't want to try to put a JDM engine and trans in the car. Could I replace the D17A1 engine with a D17A2 engine and auto trans. If I do is there anything special I need to do or parts I need to buy? Any help is much appreciated.

I would do a manual transmission. Less problems. Ever car i had thst was manual, the engine went before the transmission.

This would require a lot more parts, and realistically its not worth it. Buying a manual car, would save a lot of time/money.

As for the option of switching up to a D17A2, its an option... but you're not going to be gaining a ton of power and you will need an ECU, wire harness, and a trip to a Honda dealership for re-syncing the immobilizer. These things will require more money.
