Default Anyone know what the problem might be?

Ok so I drove my car (96 Accord 2.2 non vtech) home Friday night no problem & parked it. Next morning got up to leave, got in my car, & it didn't start. It kind of stuttered & sounded like it "chocked". Then I tried to start it again & it sounded like it may have been a loose starter. I had that problem before with my starter being loose & not grabbing the flywheel so wheel would just spin like a saw. It was not the starter & mechanic said the timing belt snapped but I have no clue when it snapped. He said to rebuild engine. Too much work for him as he's a mobile mech so sent it to another mech. Hoping its not valves & just the belt but I was reading around & I'm thinking maybe theres no compression? The mechanic I sent it to said he wants to put belt on first. But can't he just check compression before putting belt on only to possibly discover the car still won't start. Car just makes this spinning noise when I try to start it..sounds like a belt is spinning but nothing else is responding. Any ideas/guesses/inputs are much appreciated.

Its rare for the belt to snap and not have any engine damage but its not impossible.

As they said the best thing to do is to put the belt back on and run a compression test.
