Figured I would start a build thread for what I have done so far. I've never bothered to make a thread before, but I figured what the hell, might as well.
I will be posting pictures of the various things I have already done when i get the car washed. and the rest will occur as i get each thing done. Here is a link to the album on my FB so that you can view the pics without having to wait forever for them to load on this thread. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1&l=1eba86567d
As of right now I have the engine built(thanks Speedfactory). I sourced all of the parts prior and then dropped the engine and parts off with them. since they will be tuning it i wanted them to do the work so that they will know what it is capable of when the tuning occurs.
d16z6: bisimoto stage 3 turbo cams, supertech head compnents, p2p0 custom length piston rods and ycp 76mm vitara pistons(might go with forged later on), stock crank, notched the block for the rods, all new acl bearings, arp head studs, etc.
trans: stock 5spd, energy susp. poly shifter bushings, b&m shift kit(blue retaining bracket with teflon bushings), buddy club spec a black shift **** and black/ blue stitch suede boot.
interior: da seats until i buy the status buckets and get a harness bar/ harnesses. crv amber guage cluster, dual gauge cluster surround.
Currently running the godspeed monomax 40lvl adjustable coilovers. they are very nice. and i daily my car as is. i run them set at about midway 20 clicks or so. on 16x7 2 piece aproma wheels and 225/50R16 Michelin pilot sport a/s3 tires. hawk hps pads and hawk rotors.
I am no longer going with the 5 lug after deciding to set the car up for the track and daily drive it. it's just not worth it when the price of a big brake kit for the type r is double the price in the case of a good company and also the swap itself being in the 1500-2k range with new parts being included. so Im going with the wilwood front and rear big brake kits, since the rear kit allows me to keep my oem trailing arms and still convert to disc.
Im also starting the designing and molding of the wider front fenders and rear quarters, once the new wheels are ordered and mounted. that will happen by the middle of april so the moulds should be done around the end of april. I've got the clay and now i just have to get the fiberglass and carbon fiber materials to make them once the mold is designed and completed. in which case i will be selling them on a made to order basis. so if anyone is interested let me know.
the fenders out there for the EK's are non-existant unless you want j's racing fenders for 700+. which is a bit much in my opinion when you only get a 15mm increase. most people nowadays that are running wider setups are more than 15mm. like mine for example is going to be about 2" wider maybe a little less. but before everyone flips out, consider the fact im running 225/50R16's and im going to be running 16x8 or 16x9 wheels with a 25-15 offset. you get the idea :D. I will post pics of the fender progress on here. I will also start another thread if enough people are interested in seeing it in the appearance build thread. and everything will be made by me personally. then the car will be painted either white diamond pearl or nighthawk black pearl, undecided as of yet.
After the 5 lug and paint i will finish sourcing the parts for the turbo kit and then I will install everything at once. Im running the y7 in the car for right now. after everything is said and done the car should be making around low 400+whp. and then i may decide to go with more power but i want the car to be streetable still.
the car is going to be a track car but also a DD to some extent. I dont plan on keeping it garaged when it isnt on the truck. I like to enjoy my cars haha.
and exterior wise I have spec-d headlights with TRS Retro-quik kit and morimoto 35w hid kit. the JP Vizage front lip, Top1 motors side skirts, 99-00 rear bumper and spats, spoiler king trunk lid spoiler and roof spoiler.
the rest of the build list will be updated as I purchase the parts.
stay tuned!!!

Reason: a slight change in plans has occured. added a link to the FB album to cut down thread load time haha
Alright so I managed to get the retrofit finished. I was waiting on pics so that i could get a good pic of the lighting improvement but i stripped one of the plastic adjuster mount pieces accidentally when i hit the high speed button on my drill. so I have to take them apart again and pit the new mount in there. but i have pics of the headlights themselves. they were paint matched for now until i get the whole car resprayed. I might go with a gloss black at that time or not, havent decided. might even go with a stock retrofit. we will see. I got the headlights because i liked the style. to each their own right?!

Reason: deleted the pics, since they were too high of a resolution. added a link to the album instead.
No more 5 lug. since I dont want to go bigger than 16's so that i can run some wider rubber on the car Im sticking with the 4 lug and just going with wilwood big brakes all the way around. the only thing to decide now is whether to stop at 4 pot or go with the 6 pot in the front.
I also finished mounting the new roof spoiler. havent had a chance to put the car on the lift to mount up the side skirts yet. the Custom fender Moulds will be started in a month or less depending on how the tips workout. Im going to order the wheels first so that I will know exactly how much wider i need to make the fenders and how much clearance I will need when turning, etc. Going with xxr 530's in either 16x8 et20 or 16x8.25 et0. I love the concave look so i may just go with the 8.25's for that extra little bit of concavity. might as well since im making fenders for them right? But I have decided to do a bolt-on flare type and complete fender moulds.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
The 16x8 +20's won't stick out at all, I have the exact same sized wheels on my car and if it's lowered, they sit flush with the fender. Honestly I'd go for something even more aggressive than you other choice if you're making new fenders for it. 16x9 0 offset should stick out about 2". 16x8.25 0 offset will stick out about an 1.25". Either would work, but since you're making custom flares, why not go big?

I think the 16x8.25's are the best bet for now. I might go bigger later, but for 16x9's im limited to the avid1 av12's(in terms of my liking) which were my other choice and I really like the concave look, which the av12's don't have. what tires do you run on your 16x8's? have any pics of your current wheel/height setup? would be nice to see.

Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
Yeh mine wont fit without flares in that case haha. im running 225/50r16 michelin pilot sport a/s3's. they rub just barely right now whenever i go over a bump too fast haha. not to mention I have the skunk2 upper control arms running the camber at 0 in the front and the pwjdm rear camber links. I could probably go lower if i cambered them in a little but i like the stability of the camber being zero'd out, since most every turn is a test to see how fast i can go around it :D. and i had to raise the car just to run the tires lol.
I love the hatch though. nice color on the wheels too.
I just cant wait to get the wheels so i can get the rear flared and the front fenders done.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
so the next step is ordering the wilwood 6pots for the front. I was going to get the wheels first but the brakes are going to need to be done soon so i would rather be safe than sorry. those get ordered friday.
if i make enough money over the weekend, the wheels will be ordered too but if not then they will be next paycheck. as well as the carbing strut bar for the front. the rear wilwood kit will be the following paycheck.
once the wheels get here, the work on the fenders starts, which should only take a couple of days to do. about a day to design and make the mould and then another day to lay the fiberglass for the flares. once those are done, i start the full fender design and mould on the front fenders.
It's coming together. already got the front brake lines and master cylinder from wilwood in the mail.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
alright. I added more picks of the new parts to the album. also posting a pic of the wheels i currently have running the 225/50R16 michelin a/s3's and the Top1 Motors side skirt diffusers. front and rear diffusers will be in a couple months after i pick up an authentic ctr lip and get the brakes/suspention finished.
the other pic is of the engine I had built by speedfactory. cant wait to hear the lopey idle with the bisi stage 3 turbo cams haha.
engine in the garage from SpeedFactory
here is an idea of how little clearance i have with the 225/50r16 michelin a/s3's and raised most of the way up. only rub when turning and hitting a bump/dip in the road.
this is how much the tires stick out with the current 16" aproma 2 pieces. now you might see why flares/wider fenders are necessary with the new wheels being 16x8 +20 or 16x8.25 +/-0
Top1 Side Skirt Diffusers. they stick out about 1.5" from the OE Skirts and follow the skirts profile all the way.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
Yessir! Haha. Im so anxious, wish i could fast forward to next paycheck to get more parts ordered and installed. Gotta get ready for the spring and summer meets.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
"225/50/16" - That's a lot of sidewall. Just curious why that size tire. Also, your stock size is 185/65/14 so a 225/50/16 is 1.4 inches larger in diameter, 4.3 inches larger in rolling circumference and will increase your speedo by over 3 mph. A better fit would be the 225/45/16 at .5 inches larger in diameter and only 1.5 inches larger in cir. and only 1.4 mph increase. The 45 series is harder to find and more expensive. Perhaps going to a 17" wheel in a 40 series if you want to stay at 225 mm in width. Just my perspective.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
Yeah. Its is off by 4mph when im at 70 so my actual speed is 74mph but ot isnt an issue when im in town. I did that size because it was the widest 16" tire that was an all season tire. I didnt want to go with anything larger than a 16 at the time. Now its just a waste if i go bigger before these tires are used up haha. I wanted a meaty width for when i run the 16x8.25's.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
So I am going to ask this to see what others might think. does it seem too much to have the 6 piston brakes from Wilwood or should i go with the 4 piston? keep in mind I will be tracking/daily driving this car and it will be running around 400whp. any advice from anyone with some experience with a similar setup is always welcome. otherwise, please be knowledgeable in your advice please. and thanks for any and all time invested to answer this :D
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
I would finish up on your turbo setup and then see how much braking power you'll need. I would suggest you not throw money around and focus on one thing at a time.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
I get what you're saying but my brakes need to be done soon and so I want to get them done and since the bbk is on the list, I might as well get it instead of wasting another 300 on brakes. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
Alright, Got the 530's, now I just have to wait for the centering rings to get here tomorrow. heres a couple pics, you can check the album link as well if that is easier to view. if any of my posts mention pic's, and you dont see them, then just check the link to the photo album.
and a different angle to show off those curves, haha. love me some concave wheels.
snagged a buddy's $20 to use as a way to show you the amount of concavity these have. this was shot so that you would see straight across the the other lip and know how deep they are. about 3-3.5" i would say, at the center.
the wilwood BBK is next. the kit should be ordered this thursday if I made enough this weekend.
gonna be tight on the other secret goodies before the June Meets/Shows since I discovered that im gonna be short by $811 this paycheck since an old bank did some BS and failed to notify me of it when i asked about any "outstanding issues" i needed to resolve, a couple years back. now i gotta pay up, but i figure $811 is better than $2000. gotta love lawyers haha.....On second thought, No you don't.
Re: My 97 z6turbo LX. 5lug and Widebody coming soon.
IIRC 0 offset puts the hub in the middle of the wheel so i guess the concavity would be 4.125" deep, seeing as they are 8.25" wide. feel free to corect me if im wrong.
