Default expected mpg??

I have a 1993 DX hatch with an automatic trans and an engine swap to the 1.6 v technology. On an average driving 100 mile round trip per day at 65-70mph I get 28 mpg. I might could get 30 if I really take it easy. Question is: is this about right with this setup? I also have a 1.5 engine at home I could swap with, if it would get better mileage. I would just need to find an ecu for it. What does everyone think. Not looking for the most power, just mpg. Thanks

So in order to calm the flames before they start, I'd say read the FAQ's on this site. One of the things I can think of off the top of my head would be a full straight pipe exhaust, short ram intake and port and polish head job so everything can be very free flowing. Complete tune-up, including the 125k parts (water pump, timing belt, etc.), flushing full cooling system, brand new fully synthetic oil. Don't even think of a swap if you're saying "1.6 technology" because you know nothing about cars, or probably even have one.

Nix everything this guy said except for the tune up (plugs, fuel filter, pump, etc.) Enjoy MPG and the way the car was meant to be driven.

Bolt ons and a valve job for gas mileage? Are you high?

For an autotragic, 28 is reasonable. If you actually want good gas mileage, you'll want a third pedal. A tune-up, if you haven't done one recently, might get you another 1 or 2 MPG, but that's basic car maintenance - you should be doing it anyway.

true. in my old 5 speed d16z6 i topped out at 40 mpg back when i was working full time in another city, i had a 20 mile each way trip every day, and i could regularly hit 350 miles on tank of gas. one time i hit 40 mpg avg economy for a tank, and that included some city driving. By no means was i ***** footing it either, just not racing around like a dumb ***

Thanks to auto complete my v tec engine turned into the technology thing above. I purchased the car from my brother who stated he use to get 35-40 with the stock 1.5. He blew the engine and replaced it with the 1.6 before I got it. I just put the correct ecu in to make the VTEC work. It also has had the normal maintenance done as well as synthetic oil. I have a 1.5 that he had also purchased prior to me getting it. Just didn't know if I would be better with it or what's in it. Maybe this clears things up a little, thanks

Yes.

The 4 speed automatic transmission gets way lower MPG than the 5 speed manuals.

My wife's with the 1.5L only gets about 24-26MPG. Your 28 is pretty good for an autotragic.

Maintenance is key to making your car efficient with fuel. I hope you've been keeping up with it.

Yes, I have been doing the proper maintenance. Just replaced the timing belt, water pump, and an idler 2 weeks ago. Sounds like the 28mpg isn't that bad. I was just hoping since the car was so small it would be a little better.

The automatic does fine but if you want more fuel savings look into a 5spd conversion.

At a minimum, fill up your tires. At least 3 psi over the rating in the glove box for better mpg's. Harder tires will give you better mpgs also, but not right away (cause they are still softer when new).

Definitely swap to manual transmission if skill, time & funds allow. The motor will run way more efficiently with no torque converter AND an extra gear.

I average 34mpg 50/50 mixed-driving in my B18C-R swapped 94 CX.
