Opinions: Rebuild or swap?
Hello, this might be a stupid question and im a level 6/10 newbie lol but heres the deal.
I shitted my d15b7 and threw a rod right out the block. Replaced it with an $800 b18b1 and LS Trans with Stage 3 6 puck ACT clutch. I was in a rush to get back on the road so I didnt really fix all the leaks. Its smoking bluish which from what I've researched could more than likely be a piston ring. I have a new oil pan gasket waiting to get fitted in. I have just a bit of oil on my 3rd cyl spark plug and the plug is cracked so i know that needs replacing. I need to do a compression check to see whats going on in there.
This brings me to the question, should i rebuild the bottom end completely or just replace the ring(s) and gasket? The engine had 180k+ on it
I also have the option to buy a b16 longblock for $400 and replace the internals with the LS stuff.
Which makes more sense (if any at all) and what direction should I go? Not trying to put out too much power yet cuz I'm a noob and still wanna learn what I got.
I will boost later though.

Why/how do you want to put LS internals in a B16 longblock?
You can get a low mileage LS/B20 JDM longblock for $500-800. Sell your LS longblock for like $300 to someone that wants to rebuild it or build it. Jdmenginescorp.com has sold me quite a few super clean engines/transmissions. I got a REALLY nice B18B for like $700-800 shipped.

no and no...lol jk i have the time and can save and pay little by little
idk i heard that the LS internals were more reliable? i know its a n00b thing so thats why I'm seeking advice. I bought this engine like 3 weeks ago for 800 lol so I'm gonna pretty much lose out huh? and I'll look into that website. thanks.

Wait, is this a serious question?
To replace the rings, you HAVE to do a complete bottom end rebuild. Re-ringing the motor without honing, replacing bearings, seals, and belts, and not inspecting and possibly replacing your oil and water pumps is border lining on stupid. Do it right the first time, or don't bother doing it at all.

OP, I wouldn't try the LS internals into a 1.6L block thing. No...LS internals are not more reliable. Especially yours...which are drinking oil.
Buy a low mile longblock. That's my recommendation.
Okay got it. I'm gonna probably gonna go with the b16a and just make sure to cover all the stops. And I know nothing much of rebuilding and still learning so that's why my questions may seem stupid. Gotta start somewhere right?
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.
Another question for you is this, Have you research building b18 motors? Or any engine build threads? This is to enlighten you.
If you aren't sure the time and effort involved in fully rebuilding a motor, you should give my build thread a look. I have a fully detailed engine rebuild in it, complete with proper steps, how-to's, tools, and torque values. I'm fairly sure a complete wrench novice could read my thread and successfully build their own motor. Speaking of which, I should go update it...
if you know how to building the engine yourself, then YES rebuild it.
Sure it will cost about $400 in parts (os pistons) $250-400 for machining/cleaning of block & head, but IMHO it's better than wasting time swapping in unknown high milage swap.
that's just me though.

Do the rebuild. Unless you know the history of the engine you're putting in, then it is going to be a big question mark. Rebuilding it yourself and you can know what to expect a little bit better.
Or if this is the daily, buy the desired engine, rebuild desired engine, build desired engine, and swap later. But then you run the risk of one engine crapping out on you while your still building the other.
Money and time.
First of all thank you guys for not bashing because I see some of the questions that come up in this forum.
NotARacist: I will read your build thoroughly and thanks for the advice
I'm currently using this as the daily but I have the time and so far $3500 saved toward whatever I need to do.
It makes sense to do the rebuild after all because it will be new parts and basically a new engine vs. buying one for the same price of a swap that may have problems.
Tony_2018: I haven't gone in depth into any rebuild threads but I will read NotARacist's to get an overview. I have knowledgeable people around me but no one is 100% expert.
My only problem is while I do like the feel of vtec I don't want to seem like I'm doing LS/V or w/e just to be like everyone else. I will probably swap the head with a vtec and go through the steps to make sure it's done right.
Before I ask more questions, I will make sure to do tons of research.
Thanks again and apologies if I keep bumping this thread with useless replies.
Feel free to suggest websites for kits you've had good experiences with for parts and stuff. I don't wanna use the craigslist route for everything.

This isn't about the knowledable people AROUND YOU, this is to educate yourself so you know what you're getting into, have the proper tools, to know what types of questions to ask and not ask for information thats already on the web or in a repair manual. How are you going to hang with the big boys and talk about your build? Every spec you need is in a repair manual, every tool that'll you need is described in that same manual. THE HELMS MANUAL NOT THAT HAYNES MANUAL.
