1993 Civic EX Timing
I recently pulled my D16Z6 cylinder head so I could change the valve guide seals. Before I took it apart it ran great except for blowing oil whenever I put my foot in it. After putting everything back together I can't seem to get it to run right. When the timing is set right it won't start at all, but if I move it by one tooth it starts, revs up to 1,500, surges, and throws a CEL #4 which is the crankshaft position sensor if I'm not mistaken. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.
Mine is a little complicated as it is missing the whole timing cover. The only timing marks I've got to go by are the ones on the cam gear, and the TDC and 15 degree mark on the crank.
Oh, and as far as I can tell the cam gear is in the appropriate position with the word "UP" pointing up, and the lines even with the head plane, and the TDC on the crank looks to be pointing straight up.
TDC on the crank pulley or the crank gear? pulley mark should be at about 11 o'clock, the crank gear pointer should be just past the top at about 1 o'clock with the keyway facing to 12 o'clock.

So the lower outer timing cover is missing? The sites for the crank pulley is on the outer lower timing belt cover and without it, it will be quite a much larger challenge to get TDC set on the Crank via the pulley. You will most likely end up at least one tooth off if not more trying to eyeball the crank pulley.
I think it might help knowing exactly what timing cover parts are missing.

that is your problem the mark on the pulley is for ignition timing, engine timing is taken off the gear itself, you are almost 90 degrees out of time then. line up the keyway ( the little metal chunk that holds the gear line up) line it up to 12 o'clock. your cam gear timing on the head sounds good tho. Look at that picture Tom posted, the bottom left one you will see what I mean.
