Default Crankshaft pulley removal

Hi,

I'm new to Hondas (and working on my car, in general). I was trying to change the timing belt on 93 Civic EX, but I ran into a problem with the crankshaft pulley. I got the removal tool. But when I removed the splash guard, I noticed that instead of having the socket for it, the pulley was rounded. Is there a secret to getting it off, without using an impact gun?

Thanks in advanced.

yep. use a breaker bar with a 17mm socket, remove the flywheel dust cover, and use a prybar to keep the flywheel from spinning while you loosen the bolt

Oh, OK. That sounds a lot better than what I was trying to do (jam a screwdriver in one of the holes).

I ended up giving up, and asking everyone I knew if they had an impact gun.

But thanks! I'll have to remember that.

If you have holes on the pulley you can also get a universal pulley holder.

Found mine:

Never seen that one before, but there is the pin style tool that works for those with hole. It uses your socket extension as a support.

This is the one I use when air is a problem:

That one is very similiar to the Honda tool. The only difference is that one uses a ratchet or breaker bar to extend it while the Honda version has a detachable handle that connects to it.

And then there is this trick:

I got frustrated and took a big channel lock pliers I have, clamped it to the pulley where the power steering pump belt goes, sandwiched the handles of the channel locks between the lower control arm and a big block of wood on the ground, lowered the car so that the weight of the car was on the handles, and the harmonic balancer still slipped when I turned the bolt!
So I looked at what I was working with a came up with a idea:

As you can see I put a big bolt through one of the holes on the crank pulley, put a bolt through the tow bracket at the front of the car, and attached a chain to the bolts via nuts.

After using this method the bolt came off with a couple firm pushes from my foot.
I don't know if someone else has thought of this before since it's so simple but anyway I wanted to share this with everyone so that you all wont end up ruining your harmonic balancer with channel locks like I did.
Hope this helps.

Probably not the best way but does seem to work to get it off. LoL

I might grab one of those pulley holders for the next time.

I almost did something like the chain method. I was getting pretty desperate.

used this method countless times over with great success....especially if you're working by yourself.

Does the crank turn clockwise when it's running? If so, on a Volvo 850 I had, I put a breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt, propped up the end of the breaker bar with some wood, then turned the engine over momentarily with the key: voila, bolt loose. Tightening it back up is another matter, though.

That won't work with these older honda's. Also doesn't work with most domestics that do spin clockwise as they use reverse thread bolts.

Most designs tighten the bolt when the motor spins.
