Need advice, 98 CRV motor sounds like marbles from 3k-4k rpm
I need some advice/help. I acquired a 98 CRV,4 cylinder, 166K miles. I had to change timing belt, wp, seals, all that stuff when ya do a timing belt, did a valve adj, only like 2 exhaust valves needed tweaking, replaced cap and rotor, plugs, injectors, car had some issues that I had to address. we've been driving it, and I noticed that under load, 3k-4k it i thought it was "pinging", motor sounds like marbles rattling around, I ran higher octane fuel, still does it, rechecked timing, then advanced it 4 more deg. book says 14-18, so its now at 22. Still rattles, same rpm..Idle ok, but not as smooth as I'd expect, cleaned the throttle body, checked for vacuum leaks, tested the IAVC, or whatever its called, un plugging it idle drops very low, hooking it back it returns to where it was, so I'm assuming its working... I thought I had everything covered but it still "rattles".. Kinda pisses me off, I'd like to sell it, the average "joe" might not even here it, but I want to fix it, any suggestions????
Thanks, Gary G.
Thanks, Gary G.
Advancing your timing only makes the problem worse. You need to retard it and see if it goes away assuming it is in fact detonation. Pull your plugs and check for detonation before you potentially blow the engine.
Marbles in a tin can.....and you changed timing belt? That's a recipe to cook up Detonation. Better check your timing marks to make sure they're all aligned properly otherwise your motor is toast.
