Default at what point does the rear sway rip out subframe

Hi guys,

No, this has not happened to me, yet... For those of you it has happened to what springs/ spring rates where you running?
Just a thought but, factory rates should be able to handle a little more (more than the 13mm si) bar, right? Maybe 19mm?

I've searched, read this forum for years and love you guys. The amount of information is priceless! Thank you!

Please correct me if I'm wrong but, less spring rate is less stress on the subframe, right?

Where did you get that stock spring rates can handle more than 13mm? What spring rates are you even referring to? What yr civic are you referring to? Details please.

The softer the spring, the more the swaybar has to work. The swaybar is a transversely mounted torsion spring. It wants to keep thd car flat. If the suspension springs are soft, it will have to do more to control body roll.

Soft springs and big swaybar means torn subframe on NON-ITR Integras.

Yes a 19mm can rip out your subframe.

Swaybars also come in different stiffnesses. Generally speaking, do not exceed the stock sway bar without reinforcement unless you have an ITR.

The stock integra (non ITR) bar is 13mm.

My apologies,
Factory/factory-ish rates for a 97 civic lx. What I mean by "ish" is Moog replacements. Moog rates there springs at 213 front and 101 rear, their numbers not mine...

Then what of Del Sol's with a 15mm?
I'm not trying to be difficult just curious.
Thank you for your time.

I understand how sway bars work, but... my rationale is that of higher spring rates make bars "work" harder creating more stress on mounting points, in this case the subframe.

This is also a daily driver, not track car.

This is exactly correct and answers all points unless you have a new question about it.

Thank you for your time.
That's the stock size and stiffness of bar for that vehicle. Based on vehicle weight, suspension travel, spring/shock rates, and overall geometry.

Sure, there's a factor of safety and you'd likely be fine upsizing a bit. But subframe tears are an expensive fix.

The reason stiffer springs take stress away from the sway bar is that they don't allow the car to roll as much.

Anti roll bar is the technical name of a sway bar.

More roll, more work. Soft springs, more roll. Hard springs, less roll.

Keep in mind he mention the car was a 97 lx, but then switched to a del sol.

My car is a 97 lx. I mentioned the del sol for the purposes of stock sway bar size. Just making a note that some factory rear sways are bigger than the safe size of 13mm without the necessary reinforcement.

Sounds like it to me with this played out topic.
If you're worried about then just get a friggin' brace. No mater what size swaybar then.

I haven't seen a civic with a bigger swaybar other than 13mm, I can't really confirm that the del sol came with a 15mm rear swaybar.

It did in the VTEC model. But this isn't a Del Sol he's talking about so I don't why we're discussing any car other than the OPs, which did NOT come with one.

If you're using a stock 13mm integra bar, you do not need a brace. ASR makes braces if you need one.

OP didn't list a car to begin with and started adding the del sol into the mix. Check it. Either way it depends on the size of the swaybar if you need a brace on a 96-00 civic.

I have a 13mm rear swaybar stock front sway bar and type r springs on my 00 civic, awesome ride and just what I expect from a type r.

CTR's have 26mm front, 22 or 23mm rear sway bars. They're also all hatchbacks.

What does that info have to do with my setup?

edit: oh I see what you're looking at, I meant to say my type r springs are exactly what i needed for my ride.
