Default Favourite Valve Spring Compressor to make the job easy

Hey guys, Im finding a few methods to remove the valvesprings on a d16 engine. I do have the head off the car. This is my first time to teardown and rebuild a d16 head so Im looking to make it simple to compress the springs and do the work.

Does anyone have a favourite tool or an ingenious idea they have made work with the d16's?

I used a standard parts store, no-name compressor and a deep-well O2 sensor socket (NOT the offset kind, that won't work). You can find pics of how I did it in my build thread.

That fancy B-series one doesn't work on the D's, does it?

It can work, yes. It should have the depth to reach the retainers without hitting the walls, but I'm not totally sure about that...I'd have to check my FSM's to compare the two.

This tool will make your valve spring life much easier and much faster than the individual spring compressors that you find at any auto parts stores.

Amazon.com : Valve Spring Compressor Kit Toyota, Honda, Volve, VW.AUDI ..... : Honda Valve Spring Compressor Tool : Everything Else Amazon.com : Valve Spring Compressor Kit Toyota, Honda, Volve, VW.AUDI ..... : Honda Valve Spring Compressor Tool : Everything Else

And it's not much more in price.

Not sure if it works well on B series motors with the dual cams but on the SOHC engines it's a dream.

What do you press it with, I would think you'd need some leverage with valve springs, especially upgraded titanium springs etc. I'm sure you aren't just pushing straight down with your hand/wrist. After a few I could see fatigue setting in.

That's what I like about the tool I posted. Easy slide across the bar for each spring and the leverage you get with the bar makes it easier.

For removal any deep socket that isn't bigger than the retainer and a quick tap of the hammer will work. Granted, the socket doesn't have the handy catch magnet.

You use your whole body weight I like it cause it's small and I can have the head just sitting flat on my work bench.

I really can't say. I've don't have a DOHC to test with. And I have seen NotARacist mention about tight spacing with the DOHC motor. Not sure if it will fit properly or not on a DOHC.

That is one advantage with B Swapped93's tool, it will work on any over head cam motor made by anyone just about.
