Need a B series EXPERT to identify my head with cinfidence
Hello Honda-Tech!
...I'm in need of EXPERT clarification! I purchased this head a while back under the impression that it is nothing more than an ordinary B16 head... Recently I was told it was an early Type R head and that its very rare..which I highly doubt. Shortly after, I got an opinion elsewhere and was told its a B17 head (early GSR) and was a "better" B16 head and to hang on to it.......
Now I'm very curious but still not convinced its anything special.... I did a little research myself and came to conclusion its an early B16 head and nothing more...
Can someone please clear these assumptions and confirm what head I have?
Thanks in advance!!!

Appears to be an early gen b16 head cast in 1989. Fyi, pr3 castings were used for all b16, b17, and type r heads.
correct me if im wrong, but the type r heads had slight cleaning on the intake ports from the factory?? my head does not have this......
R the valves out of the head? If they r take a pic of the tunnel from the under side where the intake valve goes, looking up towards the guide and I can tell u if it's an itr or not.

yes that's what I thought. I've had a head before that wasn't stamped so I assumed that was only from hmotors motors. Sorry.

It is NOT a Type-r head due to the casting year. ITR heads (to my knowledge) were only cast beginning in 1995 for 1996 model years.
It is NOT a b17a GSR head either, due to the casting year. B17 casting years only began for the USDM market in 1991 for 1992-1993 model years and b17 engines were not used in the Japanese market.
The stampings indicate cast in (8/9)=1989, month of ( /7)=July for a 1990 model year
OBD-0 B16a.
This "COULD" be from a Japanese spec, Civic SiR, Integra RSi & XSi (DA6-DA8) chassis, as all of these used DOHC Vtec b16a engines.
Regardless of know exactly what type of car it came from, it is a B16a head through and through.

B16
You can shine a flash light down a Itr head and see the polished bowls
Plus the 89 is give away it's a old b16

I can't believe you had 2 individuals, actually tell you that it could be a itr or gsr head.
With your head, you should identify the cams and see if it has auto or manual cams, or if there even are cams with it?
