My rear top hat bolts are seized and i stripped out the alan wrench. I can either go to the junkyward and get 2 struts for 30 a piece or maybe get an impact wrench for 50 bucks. What do you suggest.

 

if they're stripped how is an air gun going to help ? just cut them off then grab new tops hats, I see them all the time for sale.

also any air gun for under 300 is going to be junk the only worth while ones are IR.

 

No the alan wrench part in the end of the shock is stripped. i can take an air gun and clamp the shock and spin it off though... Or hope the ones at the junkyard arent seized

 

ohh well just use a 1/2'' breaker bar w/14mm socket that'll do the trick.

 

Yeah. For the price of an impact wrench i can buy the stuff to get them off and then have tools left over i guess.

 

I was using new koni shocks so I cut my top hat nuts off. Cut them off and buy some new ones.

 

If you have new shocks, you can find a way to vice grip the shock shaft. You can use a spring compressor. I have a floor mounted hydraulic compressor....but....I usually just point the spring away from my face and genitals and remove the nut.

 

None of that will work the nut is stock on the shock rod

 

If you can take the stress off of the tophat than the nut won't be so stuck on there. An impact gun might be able to get the nut off but you need to compress the spings to relieve the tophat. Also as someone state, since you're replacing the struts ( and hopefully with new ones ) use a vice grip on the rod itself and do your best to remove the nut, with impact is better.

 

Why wouldn't vice gripping the rod and turning the nut work?

 

This method should work but only if you're replacing the strut, you need to place the vice grip on the rod behind the springs.
