Default Overheating issues...

Hello ..

Just recently, when I am stopped in traffic, the temperature in my gauge slowly starts to rise up .. up to the point where it is a slightly above the half way mark. My water pump and thermostat were changed this year.

What things can I check? I know my fans worked in the summer time, but I haven't checked them recently. Is there a way to make sure both fans are working correctly? Also, would it hurt to get a radiator flush, I have 127k miles on my car .. (1997). As soon as I start moving the temperature goes back down, it happened to me this morning on the freeway when I was stopped. (Accident). It was only 60 degree's out ..

Thanks ....

Will that be your thermostat?

It is worth a check, as it sounds like the cooling system is fine (fan, pump, radiator etc).

If you are saying that it cools down as you drive, it probably is the fan. Check to see if the fans kick on. You can also test the thermostat by putting it in boiling water and see if it opens. For how cheap they are, I usually replace them with a factory part. I have had issues with the Stant ones you find at most auto parts stores, and after going through a few bad new ones I will never use one again.

Thanks for the responses, how do I go about checking to see if the fans go on? Is there something I can do to make them both come on??? How hard is it to get the thermostat out? I always thought it was a pain the **** on our 5th gens.

Thanks!

to check if the fan is working, just let your car idle for a few minutes, the fan should kick on then turn off soon after it reaches operating temp... if you see this happening, i'm almost + that your thermostat is fine... does your coolant overflow? if your coolant is bubbling, it's a sign that your headgasket might be blown...

Just and update, it turns out it was the fan switch that was causing the problem. I guess we have 2 fan switches, one of the switches went bad ...

Thanks people!
